Summer is Here
(inspired by Kristina Mahr's 'Summer Solstice')
It is the first day of summer.
I am swallowing sunshine like it's a watering hole
in the dessert and I've been wandering for 40 years.
I am plunging into it, to forget a long list of things
that cannot be forgotten. My eyes are crinkled,
my thighs sunburned, and I've painted my toes an
ocean blue, finding joy in simple pleasures.
I laugh more. I think I can be happy here.
I can see a future shaped of my hopes and dreams
again instead of laying awake in bed waiting for
inspiration. For salvation.
I wrote you another poem.
Or maybe I wrote it for me.
It is the wind blowing through an open door and
holes in the wall.
When the sun finally sets, I might read it to you.
