It saves me every time
I am drowning in my words
Pulls me up
Pumps my heart
While forcing air through me
It refuses to let me go
📝
It doesn’t understand how much
It has given true meaning to my life
I can churn the letters to formulate words
And use them to produce sentences that
Dance off my fingertips
Arranging themselves into a language which
Hijacks the senses
Filling it with vivid imagery
The results often surprise me
📝
With it, I am fully immersed in an experience that is so absorbing
That It smacks me out of my self to a point where
Healing hemorrhages out of me
And in the process, I am able to shed off many layers of skin
that leaves my mind clean
A blank slate for
More words to populate
So they can be released before I retract
Out of reflex
When fear begins to suffocate me again
📝
For years I tried to pretend
that poetry wasn’t my best friend
It knows everything about me
Including my deepest thoughts
As well as the ugly parts
It comes back every time I push it away
Ignores my wishes and stays
It allows me to be compositionally naked
Dares me to reveal my truths
And for once I can reveal with utmost honesty
That without poetry
Mentally, I would be six feet deep
📝
I owe it so much gratitude
There aren’t enough words to fully express what poetry has done for me
