Odd Man Out

A Lifetime Struggle

By Dan R FowlerPublished about a year ago Updated about a year ago 1 min read

Odd Man Out

Never was much for fittin’ in,

No matter how I tried I couldn’t win.

From birth and throughout life,

It seemed that each day was a fight.

It wasn’t as if I really cared,

All I ever wanted was time to be shared.

It’s not me who has faltered along the way,

But requirements that I had to do what people say.

I’ve never been one who agreed as much as some,

The nodding soon fell silent when hard times come.

And in the valleys that we’ve all come to know,

It wasn’t the clicks who won or the status quo.

There has been a narrow road few have chosen to walk,

Those who decided to act and not simply to talk.

It takes more than just saying that one will,

It would be better for those to remain still.

Each challenge requires one to move forward,

Into unknown regions of disbelief, no matter how awkward.

Sometimes it requires one to fight against the standards,

When those who said they’d remain become a hazard.

So stand on your own feet and demand to be heard,

Where those who hear you think that you’re absurd.

The things that you stand for are not always accepted,

To be heard above a crowd one should expect to be rejected.

I never was much for fittin’ in,

And that has been a divider with some kin.

But I let them go their way, say whatever they will,

For within me, my heart is peaceful and still.
