No, Thank You

Roses are red and covered in thorns

Violets are as blue as my heart

I’ve learned to take shelter during the storms

The one that you brewed once tore me apart

Honey is sweet so you forget that it’s sticky

And before you know it, you’re stuck

I think I prefer the thorns that are prickly

At least you know what to expect

Flowers are a beautiful sign of affection

Till they’ve wilted and fade in decay

Leaving you feeling the need for protection

Paying debts that a broken heart pays

So you can keep your red roses and violet's of blue

And the sweet sticky remnants they leave

Give me some whiskey and a brand new tattoo

And a sweatshirt without hearts on the sleeve

Even without the thorns & blue & stickiness, those gifts always seemed to get returned to me.

For a while, this poem rolls and finds its way into the soul. It never stops, though. It remains with you describing the sense of objects and updates the “roses are red” lines from a bygone era. Full of truth and in touch with reality, the poem simply lifts and flies.
