Michigan in April

Spring trees reward our determined hope

that life won't stay gray-stained-frozen.

They flex and swell;

burst out in fingers of longed-for green.

Stalwart pines now stand straighter

relieved of their place as lone prophets

giving insistent voice through the cold of Winter

that Spring and new life will return

if only we hold firm to that hope.

Fruit trees lift curving limbs

and gather cascades of ruffled blooms-

their fragrant topknots float petals that create bruised and delicate eddies

in shades of cream, pink, and magenta.

Along the highway a vivid act of faith makes me smile each morning.

Standing in a rough row, a few dozen daffodils far from any house

bear witness to an act of kindness;

bulbs dropped into the chilling soil of Autumn to bloom and brighten April's travelers.

    Wow, I love poems that highlight the beauty of nature. This was great

  • Even as I mourn the passing of winter, those first few hints of spring are delightful.

    The way this adds to the rhythm, I just love: "that life won’t stay gray-stained-frozen." That final stanza is my favorite. "Bulbs dropped into the chilling soil of Autumn to bloom and brighten April’s travelers." Simply gorgeous. So glad Paul shared this in his Deep Cuts!
