If Words Could Speak

If words, over the heavens, could speak,

They would tell you of our bond,

Of how this friendship blessed me when I felt weak.

It is something, my dear, many seek

But often miss, for they won’t look beyond.

If words, over the heavens, could speak,

They might reach you on your peak

And once more remind you of our ronde,

Of how this friendship blessed me when I felt weak.

I have often wondered if, like me, you still seek

The shadows of our childhood monde.

If words, over the heavens, could speak,

Maybe they would once again reach your cheek

And invite you to dream, by our beloved pond,

Of how this friendship blessed me when I felt weak;

Maybe we could relive this once profound streak,

And avoid thinking of your fateful last second,

If words, over the heavens, could speak

Of how this friendship blessed me when I felt weak.

I wrote this poem in response to Mike Singleton's Challenge in the Vocal Social Society Group on Facebook.

Theme: Write a Sonnet or Villanelle about Friendship

"If Words Could Speak" is a villanelle, a poem containging five stanzas of three lines and one of four. The rhyming scheme is aba, aba, aba, aba, aba, abaa.

The first and third lines of the poem form the last lines of the four subsequent stanzas in alternation. The last stanza ends with the 1st and 3rd lines as a rhymed couplet.

That's it for today! Thank you for reading.

I love it. The villanelle is a gorgeous form, and you utilize it perfectly here. I feel the peace of the friendship, the love stretched across the heavens and its strength, and the sadness of its interruption. So very well done.
