Diviners
comfort and joy
They said:
You stared through empty space
Beyond that vacuum and into the very heart of creation
And you focussed
Your eyes on that delicate point
Between the past and the future
Neither behind you nor in front
And there
Right there you glimpsed
and gleaned
Then grasped what you did not know
A moment before
And you bowed your head back to your furious work
As your mind strained to hear again that voice inside your eyes
And we went back to our wary lives
Some of us
Watching out for people like you
Diviners
Once I saw you in your reverie
Lost in the space between
an old couple could not decide which one
You were locking eyes with
Until you reappeared before them and smiled at both
And then you did the oddest thing
You cocked your head just a bit
Like a dog might
And you smiled with remembering
You typed away as tears flowed
Smoothly down your face unabashed
Lost in happy moments of truth
He replied:
It's true
If I could somehow...
If I could only…
When I visit that place
in the center of all things
where creation vast and infinite hides in plain sight
I lose myself
divining
and sweet sorrow crinkles my heart
that I can not stay longer
