alpine adventures
whisked you away to alpine adventures
to restore your balance and
reawaken your appetite for life
on the adrenaline-fueled edge
_____
you were a shock of color
against white-on-white crystalline landscapes
a glorious ocean bird soaring and swooshing
your intense reckless abandon
tearing down yawning mountains
waking with banking
slashing chalky divots into fresh natural powder
flying into the wilderness
beneath bright skies
untouchable
racing yourself
into the unknown
chasing down your best time
winning and smiling
cutting lines through vertical terrain
carving a fresh path into forest-green swaths of spruce and pine
racing to the bottom
inspired to climb again and again
seeking the top
rising each time you fall
or fail
or reach an ending,
beginning again
and again,
your breath a whispered promise
curling into itself in the frosty air,
your daring
rewarded
with hot chocolate
and life long friendship

I never thought about that willingness to rise again and again with skiing.
Wow- I’m not a skier but live in ski country - fabulous poem showing it!!!!
You write about life on the razors edge as if you lived it. I can feel the spray of fresh powder and the steepness of the mountain slopes even as I recognize the underlying metaphor. Wonderful poetry, Christy!
