begging ants

cold begging ants

downtrodden, cold begging ants

everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants

feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants

gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants

hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants

indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants

jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants"

kings and nobles, jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants"

leaders, kings and nobles jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants"

manipulative leaders, kings and nobles jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants"

nonchalant, manipulative leaders, kings and nobles jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants"

oafishly nonchalant, manipulative leaders, kings and nobles jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants"

proud, oafishly nonchalant, manipulative leaders, kings and nobles jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants"

question the proud, oafishly nonchalant, manipulative leaders, kings and nobles that jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants"

riot and question the proud, oafishly nonchalant, manipulative leaders, kings and nobles that jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants"

stand up and be counted, riot and question the proud, oafishly nonchalant, manipulative leaders, kings and nobles that jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants"

take it all back, stand up and be counted, riot and question the proud, oafishly nonchalant, manipulative leaders, kings and nobles that jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants"

usurp is the only way, take it all back, stand up and be counted, riot and question the proud, oafishly nonchalant, manipulative leaders, kings and nobles that jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden cold begging ants"

violent uprising is the answer, usurp is the only way, take it all back, stand up and be counted, riot and question the proud, oafishly nonchalant, manipulative leaders, kings and nobles that jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants"

wasteland paradise awaits, violent uprising is the answer, usurp is the only way, take it all back, stand up and be counted, riot and question the proud, oafishly nonchalant, manipulative leaders, kings and nobles that jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants"

xiphoid weapon sharpened and aimed at the one percent, wasteland paradise awaits, violent uprising is the answer, usurp is the only way, Take it all back, stand up and be counted, riot and question the proud, oafishly nonchalant, manipulative leaders, kings and nobles that jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants"

yield the fruits of your labour, the xiphoid weapon sharpened and aimed at one percent, wasteland paradise awaits, violent uprising is the answer, usurp is the only way, take it all back, stand up and be counted, riot and question the proud, oafishly nonchalant, manipulative leaders, kings and nobles that jeer "indiscriminate, hopeless, gaunt, feverish, everyman, downtrodden, cold begging ants"

Zen awaits, zen and maybe cake. Maybe.

Thanks for reading!

Author's Notes: Yeah...this just happened. Not sure what you'd call this. Also, I missed the deadline, but with all the effort that it took to format this properly. I didn't have the heart to just bin it.

Furthermore, extra update, thanks to Rachel Deeming, I've actually put this forward for the Inverse challenge, because it does read differently in reverse. Like a de-escalation.

Some fantastic words in here, and I love the unique and fresh take on this challenge! The imagery of ants and cake is a brilliant metaphor, and the building bit by bit of this is really clever. Nice🙌

This is a very clever written poem!!

☺️👍 Unique! Cake and a call to arms are not two things we’d ordinarily think of paired together, but I found this impassioned and and illuminating. Terrific job.

Zen and maybe cake! Yes please!

So cool!! Love the ending, lol. But definitely a great call to arms piece. That build up is fantastic and I like how you change each line slightly on the repeats. Great idea for the inverse too!

Fun read, stick it to the man kind of fun. Reading it as inverse now.....it works, always great to read out of the box Paul.

Revolution brother. This was a very creative poem. I was hooked.

  • Unfortunately, someone always manages to leave that cake out in the rain & start the whole thing all over again. Subjects become the subjugators, & on & on.

  • The way my jaw kept dropping further for every line! So sorry you missed the Abecedarian deadline but so glad Rachel suggested you submit this for the Inverse! A very Paulitical poem! 🍩🥐

  • Brilliant! This reminds me of a song we learnt in school, which for obvious reasons I always loved singing and still remember. “The Court of King Caractacus“ builds, each line adding to the previous one like yours. Second last & last para: “ Now the fascinating witches who put the scintillating stitches in the britches Of the boys who put the powder on the noses of the faces of the ladies Of the harem of the court of King Caractacus Were just passing by. Now if you want to take some pictures of the fascinating witches Who put the scintillating stitches in the britches of the boys Who put the powder on the noses of the faces of the ladies Of the harem of the court of King Caractacus You're too late! (too late) Because they've just passed by!” By the now-disgraced singer/songwriter/entertainer/artist Rolf Harris; 1964.

Holy crap! This is fantastic. Well done, Buddy

Ooh what a build! At first I wasn't so sure of the repetitive progression, but it depicts the growing anarchy, the restlessness, the beating of the horse until you turn it into a dead cow or something. You really nailed this and I absolutely was gripped throughout it. Excellent piece. I'm glad you found a challenge to enter it into.

bravo, what a truly unique wat to write. I enjoyed the cadence so much, it sounded like drumming of myriad busy little feet

Paul! I feel like I just read the cheekiest, most brilliant piece of poetry ever. I think this would have won the abecedarian if you had completed it on time. Best of all, I only had to look up one word! I literally howled with delight when I read the last line. What a feast!

  • Tommy Ballard5 months ago

This is a really cool take the abcderian challenge, shame you missed the deadline for it but glad you still published it and submitted it to inverse as it does work too for that one. Great work!

  • Hannah Moore5 months ago

Oh what a shame you missed the deadline! I love how you build this abs how the meaning shifts a little as you do, like an awakening.

  • L.C. Schäfer5 months ago

Good thing you missed the deadline, this would have rendered the rest of the entries obsolete ❤️ Powerful and clever. I don't even know the name of the form here, but it's bound to have one (where you add another word at the beginning of the line to make the next line). There is NOTHING accidental about this. I hope it makes it into your next book.

  • Rachel Deeming5 months ago

So glad you didn't bin it. Sad that you missed the deadline too. This was great, Paul. One of the best I've read. Powerful attacking stuff. And that cake, like a jaunty clown. What an Unsplash find that was.
