Bitter and Downtrodden

The world has taken its toll

He understood the chances he was taking,

Riding the winds that changed,

Years disintegrating,

Hoping the outcome can be rearranged.

😡

He wears his heart upon his sleeve,

Until he hears something he dislikes,

Then a switch is flicked,

And his stubbornness strikes.

😡

Change has not been kind to his world,

He’s become hard and bitter,

No longer the person of yesteryear,

Losing his staying power, he’s now a quitter.

😡

Sadness has become his best friend,

Loneliness the wall he hides behind,

Age has taken its toll,

His attitude blunt and unkind.

😡

He has become his own worst enemy,

Destruction a way of life he prefers,

His heart is closed, his ego huge,

Sharpness and anger transfers.

😡

Immaturity raises his proud head,

He boasts it is his strength,

Never realising it is his heart he hurts,

Keeping everyone at arms-length.

😡

It’s pitiful to watch him torture his own soul,

Pushing love away in his destruction,

Solitude his personal preference,

He is love’s greatest obstruction.

😡

Ask him for his truth,

Because sadly it doesn’t show,

Bitterness and ego his greatest obstacle,

To a truth he doesn’t know.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

    Well-written, Colleen!

  • This was so sad. That's what changes does to people. They kinda lose themselves. Loved your poem!

    Sad, and beautifully penned.

  • I was going to type a self-deprecating joke, asking how it is you could know me so well from just a few comments. Then I read it again & realized you really do have me pretty well pegged, whether intentionally or not. Insightfully told.

  • ❤️‍🩹Although his heart hurts with anguish he ambles on and tries to deliver Love 😍 📝👥👍
