As Long As We Both Shall Live

Promised (for Karen)

In the rush of emotion, of course we promise.

What's mine is ours

To have and to hold

Sickness/health.

Until death us do part.

-

Because that seems so far away from this moment.

This today of bubbling, fizzing, effervescent joy.

-

I refuse to remember the truth-

We are born dying

Clock ticking

Seeking to see and be seen

Hands and souls reaching across time

Stretching, reaching, (hopefully) connecting for the briefest moment.

-

We enter alone-

ripped away from all we knew.

We will leave alone-

closing one door and entering, stepping, tumbling, falling

into what ?

We don't know the what; the next.

-

We barely know the now; the us.

Our moments splurged as if they are endless-

Stopping in seconds,

liquid golden moments of clarity,

to savor them on our skin-

drinking the blessing like balm to our parched spirits-

lowering sun-dazzled sleepy eyes to our clasped hands.

To-

This YES.

This Us.

This Promise.

This Forever in this moment and in all the rest we are granted.

As long as we both shall live.

-

Forever would just be the fraction- the smallest start- of enough.

A simply beautiful, soulful exploration of marriage and love. The music in these verses was so soothing, and now I want lay on a pillow and just savor that sense of calm and love your words evoked in me. 😌

This is a beautiful and touching poem. The imagery and language used really capture the essence of a lifelong commitment to love and support each other through all the ups and downs. The line "we'll dance through the pain" is especially powerful, as it speaks to the resilience and strength of a true partnership. The repetition of the phrase "as long as we both shall live" throughout the poem serves as a reminder of the depth and significance of this promise. Well done! Ms. Judey - As most of us, I can so relate to your articles on so many levels - Thank you for that - I'm in no way into self promotion; I'm just a self described 'Goof Writer' for the fun of it. But, I have written a (3) minute story about my Lost - Love Titled: The Last Valentine' - My Pleasure - Jay Kantor, Chatsworth, Cal 'Senior' Vocal Author

Absolutely beautiful poem. It is so easy to promise forever in a happy moment. The moment of "us" now. Time is the only one that will prove whether the promise will hold true. Great poem.
