A Thankless Duty
Let’s Try This Poetry Thing
Don’t cry, or complain,
Of the hardships of life,
Learn to thrive, and to strive,
And to function through strife.
Learn to attack the day,
With the largest of smiles,
And don’t fret too hard,
‘Cause it’s hard for a while.
Its the duty of man,
To protect and provide
To suit up and work,
By this code we abide.
We may build, we may fight,
We may cook and some clean,
Get our heads in the grind,
We’re a working machine.
We give everything our all,
And to all give our best,
Chin up, grin fixed,
Lead with our chest.
Wake up, brush our teeth,
Make the bed, spring to action,
By the end rest our heads,
With unyielding satisfaction.
It doesn’t matter what we do,
Who we are, how we earn,
Do it all with a smile,
Take the lessons and learn.
Our food is our fuel,
Our freedom, desire.
Our heart is our health,
Our drive forged in fire.
Stoic we stand,
as a voiceless nation,
Paving the way,
for the next generation.
We honour simplicity,
In all of its beauty,
So we can take pride,
In our thankless duty.

This is a quick attempt at poetry that actually rhymes! I feel, as a writer, it’s important to push the boundaries of my comfort zone, and see what waits on the other side! I’m very new to poetry in general, but I enjoyed doing this. It’s not complex or sophisticated in any way, and it kinda reminds me of the type of poetry you’d read and write in primary school, but it was FUN!
