WHY CANT YOU STAY FOCUS

One step at a time

By AdejokePublished 3 years ago 7 min read

Being able to focus is practically a superpower in today's environment, Rarely do you come across someone who can focus on a single task for hours on end, And it comes as no surprise that those who can concentrate do so much more than others.

You could benefit from better concentration in a variety of areas whether it's for employment, school, study, a hobby, or any of those, You can achieve your goals faster if you have the ability to concentrate.

Therefore, I'll outline what's preventing you from focusing today and what you can do to change it, And by reading this right now, I can tell that you're putting off getting started.

However, I'll make it worthwhile for you, So get a piece of paper and a pen.

Remember to take notes on the most important information you learned from this article ,You'll maximize the benefits of your procrastination session if you do it this way.

The journey will be lengthy, so be sure to sit back and relax.

Let's start now.

TWO DIFFERERNT FOCUS TYPES EXIST.

both scattered and focused attention.

Widespread attention is dispersed focus.

This person is a classic multitasker who tries to perform several things at once , Cleaning the house, making phone calls, and preparing meals or someone who tries to concentrate on something while also thinking about something else.

And most individuals act in this manner, They divert their focus between numerous different things, Because your brain is so terrible at switching between numerous things at once, this type of focus is problematic, You see, switching from one work to another does not happen instantly.

Instead, your brain must "load" into working memory the context of whatever you are doing, Your brain must repeatedly load and reload context when your attention is continuously being switched from one thing to another. In essence, you waste a lot of mental energy switching back and forth and become fatigued without accomplishing much, Now we have directed concentration to the opposite side.

You accomplish it by focusing all of your attention on one action and disregarding everything else. You should aspire to accomplish this, and top achievers focus in this way ,They focus like a laser beam on one subject at a time, And they give that task their full attention while ignoring all other inputs.

WHAT THE CAN YOU DO TO PREVENT A DISORGANIZED FOCUS ?

It's easy.

You should try to eliminate all distractions and stay away from anything that can interfere with your ability to focus consider it from this angle.

Let's imagine you always have access to 5 units of focus, Therefore, you are free to use those 5 units however you see fit, You could for instance, use them all for studying and achieve directed focus there.

Now imagine that while you are studying, your mother walks into your room and informs you that supper will be ready in 45 minutes, Even if that interaction only lasted for ten seconds and you were extremely focused,

Your focus is currently split.

Your thoughts will now turn to dinner.

You'll wind up wasting mental energy in the process because it will take some time before you can fully regain your focus, The strange thing is that you almost certainly always have a similarly annoying mother with you.

LET TALK ABOUT THE PHONE

The largest anti-focus machine is this tiny thing, When you receive a new notice, it makes a sound and rings or vibrates, All it takes is that one beep to get your attention away from what you were supposed to be focusing on.

However, even if your phone is in silent mode, you're still highly likely to glance at it briefly anytime you're bored thereby, dividing your focus.

Instead I'm simply suggesting that whenever you want to concentrate on something, you put it somewhere, where you know it won't disturb you and you won't be able to look at it.

However, there are other distractions besides telephones that might divert your attention, Anything is capable of doing that, but your phone is most likely the main culprit, The idea is to become conscious of potential distractions and steer clear of them.

Your physiology may also be interfering with your capacity to concentrate.

This is something that is rarely thought about.

However, you must look after your body if you want your intellect to work at its best, Your ability to concentrate will suffer if you sleep for fewer than seven hours each night, Instead it has been demonstrated that receiving 7-9 hours of sleep results in a superior ability to pay attention all day.

EXERCISE is another everyday activity that is recommended, Your body releases neurotransmitters like dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and others that help you feel good , Concentration on challenging tasks becomes easier.

When I say exercise, I don't mean running a marathon; rather, I mean taking a quick stroll around the block.

Bonus points if it's a walk in the woods.

Hydration is also critical, You may have observed that when you first wake up in the morning, you can't think well, One of the causes is that you haven't had anything to drink in over 8 hours, so you're moderately dehydrated, Your diet also has a significant impact on your performance.

If you load your face with bad foods or drink soda, you're doing your brain a harm, Food with a high sugar level causes brain fog and an inability to concentrate, You might wish to look into healthier options, So, if you want to focus better, take care of your body.

LET's LOOK AT HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR FOCUS.

It is worth noting that concentration is a skill, You can actually train your focus in the same way that you would practice for a sport the more you practice, the better you will get.

When you first start, you might only be able to focus for 10 minutes but if you do this every day, your concentration will improve and you'll be able to focus better capable of doing it for longer lengths of time, So it's okay if you can't concentrate for hours right now, over time, you can improve your directed focus.

Your mind will be preoccupied with other matters as a result, such attempts will typically fail, But that doesn't make it impossible to concentrate late in the day, All you have to do is de-stimulate your brain and you accomplish this by taking a proper pause.

It's difficult to focus on something for an extended period of time without becoming mentally exhausted, And it makes no difference whether the focus is scattered or directed both are draining, That is why, every now and then, you should take a break and relax your thoughts.

However, this is where the majority of people fail, Taking a break, you know, does not imply whipping out your phone and checking Instagram, YouTube, or whatever ,You're still activating your brain and doing things.

These activities allow you to un-plug and start recharging your mental energy, because they're not as stimulating. I know it might sound boring, but you should allow yourself to be bored to give your brain some breathing room , Ofcourse taking a mental break isn't just for when you want to switch from scattered focus to directed focus.

It's also very useful when you want to extend your ability to continue focusing intensely. Another way to look at it, is to imagine you've been running for an hour without stopping , Then you have a 15 minute break, before you'll be running for another 1 hour.

You can choose to: A.) sit down, relax and do nothing for 15 minutes.

Or B.) jump rope and do burpees for 15 minutes.

Obviously you choose the option A, as you don't want to exert yourself even more.

After all, you want to have enough stamina to run for another hour.Running is an analogy for focus in this scenario, You don't want to add more stimuli to the mix after concentration for an hour.

Watching TV or surfing the internet will simply tire you out mentally.

Find an activity that you enjoy, that is not mentally stimulating, and that allows you to detach, Going for a short walk is my favorite thing to do It always helps me mentally refuel.

The Pomodoro Technique is now the ideal technique for combining strong focus with mental breaks. So you should experiment a little and find out which combination suits you best.

Congratulations on making it this far into this article

Your concentration is already superior to that of the majority of people.

First, there are two kinds of focus: scattered focus and directed focus.

You want to create concentrated focus while avoiding being scattered.

Second, avoiding distractions is the greatest method to avoid dispersed focus ,When something interrupts you, it depletes your attention units, and your brain has to reload the context repeatedly, leaving you intellectually exhausted.

Third, look after your body you must take care of your physical health if you want your intellect to work properly , This includes getting adequate sleep, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy diet, You must take care of your physical health if you want your intellect to work properly.

This includes getting adequate sleep, exercising frequently, being hydrated, and watching what you eat you placed something in your mouth.

Fourth, focus is a skill.

It's okay if you can't concentrate right now.You may train your concentration like a sport, and you'll grow better at it with time.

Fifth, make focusing a daily habit , Instead than waiting for motivation, schedule a time during your day to focus attentively, Mornings are ideal because there are usually no distractions and your brain is not yet preoccupied with several tasks.

sixth, Unstimulate your mind, Take a nap, go for a walk, or meditate, Allow your brain to be bored and refrain from doing anything stimulating, such as perusing the internet, This is particularly vital if you wish to concentrate later in the day.

7th, take frequent breaks.

Concentration quickly becomes taxing, Give your mind a break, and you'll be able to concentrate more intensely for longer, Also, make sure you're genuinely relaxing and not just mentally engaging yourself.

8th, employ the Pomodoro technique.

It's the ideal strategy for balancing intense concentrate with regular pauses, Make this method a daily habit if nothing else.

Thank you so much for sticking with me until the end.
