What do I want and what do I need?

How to unblur the lines

The lines between wants and needs are just like the one between love and hate, it can be very blurry and confusing and that is absolutely okay.

It is okay if you feel like you are not sure about what you want and what you need. You are not alone though, most people feel like that too and that is absolutely normal but then, when the line gets too blurry it kind of makes life a little bit disorganised.

So, what are needs? They are things that are considered essential for survival and well-being. Don't forget the importance of your "well-being" financially, physically and emotionally.

What I have realised recently is that people mostly consider eating and drinking water the only needs and they tend to forget other things that everyb0dy needs for their "well-being."

Wants on the hand are things that we "desire." Before I go further on this I just want to mention that desire is actually one of the things that keeps everyone going in life but even at that, you have to desire something that adds value, that makes you happy and also improves your quality of life.

Needs are things that help you function at your best and when your "wants" are not doing that, then you need to evaluate yourself.

Some things can be so hard to classify though when it comes to identifying what your needs and wants are. For example, a car may be a need if you truly need it to make things better and it could also be a want if you really have no "need" to have one.

You might think that it actually doesn't matter if you differentiate between them and set your priorities right but one of the best things you can do with your life is being organised and knowing the direction that you are heading to.

Don't forget the law of cause and effect because when you focus too much or all of your time on what you want, it simply means that you are giving little or no time to what you actually need, the things and people that matters that matters.

So, how do you figure out what you need and what you want in life?

  • Figure out what your priorities are: You have to ask questions like what are the most important things to you in life? Once you start doing that, you will be able to identify your needs and this helping you to achieve them.
  • Don't forget what your values are: One of the most important things that defines you is your values. The things you believe and pride yourself in can help you make some decisions about what are and what should be important to you.
  • Trust your instincts: A lot of people can lie to you and you can lie to a lot of people but one thing you cannot do is lie to yourself. So, the best way to figure out what exactly you need is by trusting your gut and letting it guide you. You just have to block out some external factors and let the magic happen.
  • Make and categorise your budget: You need to understand that budgeting is one of the things that makes your life more organised and meaningful. I understand the need to be spontaneous but when you seperate your expenses based on your needs and wants, you will be able to tract where your money is going.

Your wants and needs are not constant though, things happen in life and with time, your priority will have to change. You need to keep evaluating yourself because on some occasions, if your wants and needs are not changing then it means that you are not developing yourself and adding effort to what you already know.

Above all, I want you to be kind to yourself because at the end of the day, it all starts with you.
