To Expand Out Or Niche Further In Your Knowledge?
The Wrong Question To Ask And Why

Written by a human, for humans, always.
Whether you are developing your career, building a business, or figuring out how to lead others...
You are going to hit a point that many people hit...
Where your current knowledge is not enough.
What you know may be good...
Even brilliant...
But there is something that is missing, which is preventing you from moving forward.
This leads people to a question about how to get to the next stage....
Do you expand out in your knowledge?
Or...
Do you niche further in your knowledge?
You will hear different perspectives given about why you need to go one way or the other...
But I am here to tell you that whether to expand out or niche further in your knowledge...
Is the wrong question.
This is what you would call a "false dichotomy".
It is the incorrect belief that there are two opposed positions...
And that only one of them can be correct.
The truth in most false dichotomies is...
They both end up being wrong...
Or they both end up being right in different ways.
In this particular one...
They are actually both right.
It is not about whether you need to expand out or niche further in your knowledge...
You need to do both!
Think of it like this...
If you expand out...
You are going to have general knowledge...
And even if that general knowledge is good...
It will not have the depth that is required to be truly effective at whatever it is you do...
And you become mediocre at everything.
But...
If you only niche further...
You begin to work in a silo of information...
And eventually you will become trapped because you are only focused on a line...
Unable to turn when it becomes required...
Unable to see where different things connect...
Or fail to connect.
Niching without context is a recipe for becoming blindsided by things you couldn't be aware of.
No...
You need both of these.
You need to niche enough to stand out amidst the masses...
But you simultaneously need to expand out enough to see how your niche connects with the larger picture...
And perhaps importantly...
To see how your niche may be required to change in the world.
Let me give you an example.
The Samurai were master warriors.
They niched further and further into their practices...
Such as sword fighting and shooting bows and arrows.
Arguably, they were some of, if not the absolute most dedicated to their different formats of war.
But what happened to the Samurai?
Warfare began to change.
People stopped fighting with swords and bows and opted for guns.
The guns made the armor of the Samurai, which was niched toward their style of fighting, obsolete.
The government changed around the Samurai...
To the point where it became illegal to carry a sword in public...
And the Samurai class was ended...
Through law and advancing warfare.
Today...
The dedication of the Samurai is still remembered and acknowledged...
But the practices of the Samurai are primarily done ceremonially, for fitness, or as a novelty.
No one practices their ways as a practical way to fight wars anymore.
This is exactly what happens when we niche further without also expanding out.
This is what is important to understand about this, though...
You do need to niche your knowledge in something...
You cannot niche into everything that you expand your knowledge into.
There is only so much time and energy that an individual has...
And true niching requires years of significant practice in whatever area you niche into.
You "might" be able to niche into a couple of areas...
If you dedicate all of your life to them and fail to live a fully human life in the process, which will have negative consequences...
But you will never be able to niche into everything that you will need to expand into to become deeply effective.
It simply is not possible...
And attempting to do it will leave you drained and inadequate at everything you end up pursuing.
So...
You need to find the right mix...
Niche further in a select few areas where you can truly stand out in the world...
While having just enough of an expansive knowledge to support your abilities within whatever you are niching toward.
It is not about whether you need one or the other...
It is about whether you are doing both to an adequate level to drive you forward toward your goals.
That is something that few people ever truly accomplish.
