The "Or" Problem In Understanding Problems

A Mindset Shift That Opens The World To Better Possibilities

How do you go about improving the world?

It is an interesting question that many people ask...

But it seems that we rarely make progress.

Why is that, though?

Look at any large problem that exists in today's world.

What you typically see...

Is that there are two or more parties...

Who have different perspectives on how to fix problems.

Then...

These two or more parties expect group choices...

It's our way...

Or...

Their way.

The key word in that is "Or".

This also points out the mindset problem that exists when we are looking to solve problems.

We, as humans, seem to have a knack for turning everything into sides.

Our side "Or" their side.

Our way "Or" their way.

Our solution "Or" their solution.

But here is what is missed when it comes to actually solving problems.

If you actually take time to listen...

You will often discover that both "sides" have legitimate problems.

One "side" has ideas for how to solve "their" problems...

The other "side" has ideas for solving "different" problems...

But...

Often...

The individual solutions on either side fail to address the problems of the other "side"...

But which are legitimate problems.

The result...

Is that when we keep thinking in "Or"s...

We fail to address the fullness of the problems at play...

And therefore fail to come to agreements on how to make improvements.

This is the "Or" Problem.

When you start taking sides...

And stop looking at the fullness of the problem...

You struggle to ever solve problems.

What happens far more often...

Is that either side of the "Or"...

Tries to solve "their" problems...

But without knowing the legitimate issues on the other side of the "Or"...

They either fail to resolve the problems...

Or...

Make them worse...

Which then makes their side of the "Or" look incompetent or worse...

Making the divide worse.

If you actually want to work toward making a better world...

You need to overcome the "Or" problem...

Which is accomplished...

By realizing that there is no real "Or".

There are humans...

Who have real problems...

Different...

But often related.

If we are going to come up with better possibilities to resolve the problems...

We need to understand everyone's problems...

And importantly...

How they interact.

Most problems that exist in the world...

Exist because there are different factors and priorities at play...

And when you are unaware of which factors impact which priorities...

It becomes very easy for problems to arise...

Or get worse.

The other challenge...

Is that when we are unaware of different factors at play...

Often we, as humans, misdiagnose the problems we are having.

We have a tendency to believe and blame certain factors that we are aware of...

While completely missing the true problems that we are unaware of.

So we try to "fix" our problems within the limited perceptions that we have...

But because we have misdiagnosed what is causing the problem...

We end up creating all new problems.

To overcome this...

We need to gather different perspectives...

Different people with different specialties and strengths...

Who are able to come together...

And piece together all of the factors...

To understand the real problems.

But this only happens...

When we stop looking for and finding "Or"s...

And instead understand that the only way to truly solve the problems...

Is to come together united.
