THE NIGHT I WAS SLAMMED BY A DIESEL TRUCK
Although my wounds are already beginning to heal, at times it still feels as if it were only yesterday: It was just four days before Christmas, 2019. I had been caregiver to a disabled friend and, that evening, she asked me to pick up something for dinner rather than cook. She wanted a hot ham-and-cheese sandwich from Giovanni's Pizza so, at about 6:30, I decided to walk three blocks down to the restaurant to fill her order. In fact, I'd even get a big chocolate-chip cookie along with it. After all, the weather was mild, I didn't have to waste gas, and there was very little traffic on the road. So what could possibly go wrong?

You Should Inspire You
I noticed the competition for inspiring women is fierce on vocal. I have submitted more than one piece, but there are many people that inspire me and it is hard to choose just one. Until I realized something today. I am going up against multiple articles that have written about sisters, mothers, aunts and the occasional celebrity who faced environmental, feminist and educational issues.

Hard beginnings
There it wasn’t so difficult, typing the first word. Reading this, I understand that your perspective may be different, but starting new ventures or musical instruments or ideas are hard for me. In this case, beginning new things in our lives can be quite challenging. Maybe you make a list or a target, a goal or you write a whole list of accomplishments on a post-it note and you become excited or daunted about the next step. And then actually continuing on that path results in overcoming a serious mental block. For me, I can see myself after the beginning somehow, but I find the start to be a confusing place. It’s a new experience, a place where you have no memories.

Women Who Inspire: How My Environmental Justice and Civil Rights Activist Sister, Joanne Groom, Motivated Me
While studying abroad for college in South Africa, I had the intentions of studying public health and learning about a post apartheid society. Little did I know that I would be meeting astounding women and would soon be among them--swept up in politics and boldly making differences in my own locality of Boston. Despite being away from my mother and sister for months (which is the nature of studying abroad), I found other mother-like and sister-like figures; which I feel immensely grateful for. These included the local health workers in rural Nzinga, the nurses in Pietermaritzburg Hospital, the housing and infrastructure activists at Wentworth, and the land reformist professors of University of Kwazulu Natal. But one incredibly supportive, passionate, and kind-hearted soul who really stuck out to me was Joanne Groom. While I lived in the neighborhood of Wentworth, Durban, South Africa, I met Joanne who was the media and communications officer of South Durban Community Environmental Alliance: SDCEA--an environmental justice NGO which invests in helping Durban reduce air pollution. 50% of the children in Durban have asthma as a result of pollution; and that is only one effect of it. While many only think about the long term effects of air pollution (global warming), there are people now suffering from the short term.

What's Next?
What do you do if you can't sit still? What do you do when every bone in your body is telling you go out there and do something? How do you live when everyday life just isn't exciting enough? How do you cope with an innate desire to do everything? Especially when you're stuck doing nothing.

From fear to transformation
I am writing this in the 4th week of our lockdown which the UK government in this case, has decided to put in place. The purpose of this is obviously to stop the spread of this serious virus that is a danger to the elderly and less healthy people. I totally get that and I am not really against it but…..I feeling more frustrated the longer this lockdown goes on because I know there is a solution: testing so people who are immune can go back to work and keep part of the economy going. On the other hand, I have to say that personally I have never liked our economy: there is too much inequality and it is all about money and less about being human. We still have too much fighting, violence, sexual abuse of mainly women and girls and making people work under terrible conditions, even slavery. Then there is the abuse of the earth – the climate change, pollution, extinction of animals and also our very unhealthy food and drink habits causing illness and attacking our immune systems. Let’s be real: this virus may have come at a time that we really need to stop and think what the hell we are doing! Also, how can we transform our system to a healthier and more beneficial lifestyle for everyone.

My Heart
There are so many facets of my life where someone has been a guide, a mentor or an inspiration. However, there has been one person who had been close to me, even at a distance, who “got me” right to the heart. A mother’s love is the mainstay in a girl’s life to be that guide to womanhood. Yet an individual who endured the uphill challenges and still be a successful template for greatness to me, was far beyond any inspiration I’ve had.

Madam C.J. Walker
Hey Everyone, I hope you all are fine and are taking proper measures of social distancing against COVID-19. What if I ask you the question, who inspires you the most? Of many things on which I have pondered during this lockdown is this very question. When someone asks you this question, typically, your first response is a celebrity from your favorite TV show or a widely known inspirational idol.

How to Tackle Creative Block and Stay Motivated
Creative block is something that, as a creative, a creator or just generally, most people experience at some point in their life. When creating is your job and it’s what put’s food on the table, it can become quite the vicious cycle. You need to create, but forcing it or over-exercising your creative muscle can easily lead to burnout, which flattens your motivation and creativity without, of course, flattening the necessity for you to create.

How to Attract Anything You Want.
What if you could get anything you desired simply by wishing? We’ve all been told that “in order to get something, you have to work for it”. I believe this to be 100% true, but what if you could also want something so bad, so much, that one day you have it in your life, whether that’s your dream partner, a pet, an opportunity coming up for your dream job, more money and financial freedom whilst doing what you love, getting your dream body or the chance to go on a once in a lifetime vacation. Anything you desire is suddenly, one-day, yours. This is the law of attraction.

7 Essential Lessons I Learned from "Mastery" by Robert Greene
Hello! This is my first real, serious, honest, crazy-detailed story for Vocal. I had recently just finished reading a book called Mastery by Robert Greene, a book that I have been trying for the last 3 or 4 years to finish. Life would simply get in the way, and boom, not done. But now, I can proudly say I've finished it, and have taken the time to write this. They are in the order of what I learned as I progressed through the book, so if you have any critiques or suggestions, I am more than happy to hear them out.

Love, and Life
I have been in love more times then I can count. I mean that figuratively of course. I fall in love fast and I fall in love hard. Some days I hate that I am this way always falling for a smile or an attitude or even the way a man carries himself. Other days I am so grateful that I can feel anything at all. I've met people who claim they can not love at all. This idea bothers me because these people preach love the most. If there really is a metaphorical off and on switch why did they turn it off? Do they know its off? Can anyone turn it back on?
