Unseen
It’s 4 o’clock in the morning and I was all snuggled up in bed with Lexi right next to me. When all of a sudden my mother came in and quietly nudged me, telling me to grab the phone. As I say hello, I hear the words “he’s dead”. Papa died in a car accident driving home from the club, his friend had too much to drink and lost control of the car exiting off of the freeway on Bristol. Such a winding exit, one that you don’t want to drive straight on. The car had flown off the road and he flew out of the car hit a tree and the car landed right on top of him. I had no idea I would not see him ever again. Just when we were beginning to plan our lives together as mother and father to our unborn child.

Self Love
What is self love? Is it buying yourself expensive things? Is it feeling like the most attractive person in the room? Or is it making a lot of money? Sure, these things are a great confidence booster for the ego but is it self love? For me, this WAS self love. I valued myself based on material things and always being "better". This made me feel special, more superior then others. Until one day I was sitting with myself and realized how empty I actually felt inside. How can I feel so empty and sad when I have all these beautiful things, my life is perfect, right?! No. I was sad, empty and felt like I had nothing.

Does Adversity Build Character?
But what about the notion that adversity builds character? How does that idea stand up under closer scrutiny? In an article in Inc. magazine, Jim Haudan calls adversity ‘the fuel of greatness.’ He goes on to say: ‘Adversity is one of the most powerful forces in life. It can bring out your best or your worst. Ultimately, it is up to you. Overcoming adversity is character building. It shapes us into who we are and who we will become. It creates the confidence to overcome and the learning mechanisms to deal with the things that don’t go our way.’

As long as I have a head on, I will put on my hat 🎩
In life, everyone has a story that could be happy or sad. I do not know what words would be more powerful to use in order to make you feel what I feel. I do not think using pathos would be enough to make you feel the electricity that is surging through my body as I’m telling my story, but read or listen carefully to see how life can bring you things that you do not expect.

These City Streets
"The City Streets!" Everyday on the streets is an emotional standpoint. Physically demanding, each hour is depleting. Vast numbers of thoughts race through my mind while I ponder my next move. Where can I go? With no set location, I'm free to wander. An adventure to some, for me its homelessness.

Scarred For Life
I never understood why I had to be the one with the burned legs and feet. Growing up, my one and two degree scars seemed to be an eye sore for all who interacted with me. I will never forget a cousin telling me I was ugly because of my burns. Of course, they may not have really meant anything by it, but it cut like a knife to hear. This sentiment was echoed by adults through the request to bring socks to cover my feet when I visited. These types of consistencies gave me a lasting infamy over what I looked like.
