Wake Up Call
I am a firm believer that things happen to us for a reason. Sometimes we will never understand the reason, perhaps because we failed to grasp the opportunity that was there for us within the reason. There will be many times we won't understand the reason for a period of time. Other times, things happen as a bit of an instant wake up call. There are times where we will be the instigator of the change, decision, or circumstances, and other times someone else will be the instigator, and force us into change, decision, or circumstances. We will often find that these changes, decisions, and circumstances, that are forced upon us, are against our will, creating immense stress, pain, hurt, unhappiness, anxiety, depression, and discomfort. It's easy to become angry and frustrated, even to the point we respond abruptly and nastily, but sometimes what others do to us can quite often be a blessing in disguise. There may be something they say or do that actually helps us to realize that we actually needed a good kick in the pants. Even when this happens, so often we tend to preserve our pride, and rather than admit that what someone said or did to us was in fact a great wake up call that we needed in life, we instead take our frustration and anger out on them. We deny fault, we try and pass blame, and we even try to shift focus and identify their faults and mistakes instead, all in an attempt to avoid feeling down about ourselves, and having to admit to error.

New Years Day...
I’ve always loved New Years Day. The untapped possibilities of a new year fill me with the energy to fulfill my goals. However, without committing to taking the steps required to take the goals to fruition, they’re nothing more than empty dreams—sage advice my father gave me a decade ago along with a small black notebook.

Stuck Between a Rut and a Wild Place
There's just something about staying up until 3am on a weekday. After a year of meticulously keeping a sleep schedule... or not so meticulously... I miss the spontaneity of letting the night flow on until the only sounds left are my heartbeat and the clicks of a keyboard. I miss the death of the world under blackness or moonlight while listening to the wind sing through the darkness behind the thin glass of my windows. Of course I exchanged the midnight hours for the scarlet gold of the morning sun. It's beautiful in it's own way, I tell myself, but something about a morning schedule just doesn't sit right with me.

Jake’s Take
“Fitz come on! Fitzgerald, let’s go!” My sister had just gotten a new puppy and he was not well trained yet. I was on walk duty today, and needless to say, he would not listen to me. “Fitz, I’m giving you one last chance to get out from that bush” I said sternly to him, like he’s actually going to listen. To my surprise, he did. He jumped out of the bush wagging his tail and looked at me with those big eyes I just can’t get too mad at, but he had this small piece of dirty yuck in his mouth. “Oh Fitz, come on mate” I said grabbing this dirty piece of leather, that looks like a journal, out of his mouth. “Fitz this isn’t yours mate, leave it” I said tossing it back behind the bush, my hands dirty and not wanting to deal with whatever he had just uncovered. As it hit the ground in a cloud of dirt, I saw golden lettering “open me” on the cover and a wrinkled envelope fell out. I looked at Fitz, he looked at me, maybe it’s just that a dog always looks curious but something in Fitz’s look was telling me I needed to open that journal. Taking advice from a dog, unorthodox yes, but nevertheless I grabbed the journal and the envelope and stuck it in my back pocket, I figured I’d look at it later, I had a dog to finish walking and my sister is very strict about her puppy’s walks.

WHO THE HELL LET US GROW UP?
I'm twenty-five years old. I should have my life together...or so I thought. When we were adolescents, if people mentioned adulthood, we automatically assumed the mid-20s equaled life together and easy. Oh, how we were wrong...well for some of us. Some of us were lucky enough to find our place in life and be successful while the rest of us are still trying to decide what we want to be when we grow up.

Dying To Live
“Whyyy? Why won’t you just let me die!!?” I cried out as I woke up from an attempted overdose. “God doesn’t even want me.” I laughed; struggling to lift myself up from the cold bathroom floor, picking up the empty bottle of Prozac before leaning onto the sink. I stood there a few minutes, trying to understand what went wrong. Also, realizing I looked like a zombie as I stared into the mirror. Sunken eyes, dried pealing lips, and hair that hadn’t been combed in about a week. “Well, that was a waste”. You would think I’d have to throw up or even take a couple of hours to recover but, fortunately, my body is immune to destruction. I just wish I didn’t have to work today. “Dumb ass.”
