Windfall
My head was resting forward against my clasped hands when the woman released the gold latches off her black leather briefcase. I pressed my lips into a subtle kiss for the prayers I held within my palms when she lifted one side open, turning it slowly to reveal to me a lump sum of tightly bound one-hundred-dollar bills that were kept inside. I could smell the fresh print of them; they were crisp and green as the grassy hillsides of Dolores Park. It was the one place in San Francisco where I would often dream…watching my ideas fly past me, wishing I’d somehow come across such a windfall like this—and there it was, all right in front of me…

A Brother's Bond
I am not my brother. I have spent my life studying to be a doctor, but I was never as skilled as he is. He was the number one medical professional his first year while I struggled to find a job in a decent hospital. I have always had the luck to count on his advice to help me in a pinch, but I am not that lucky anymore.

Metamorphosis
It all began one hot summer afternoon inside of my small bedroom in the Bronx, New York. My room was filled with Salsa music from downstairs, it made the room vibrate and all the frames gently moved. I never minded the vibrations, they kept me company. While sitting in front of the air conditioner daydreaming, observing the busy fruit markets across the street, I imagined myself with a basket picking fruits conversing with the local vendor. Oh, how I dream of talking to strangers and meeting new friends along the way… perhaps next time.

Welcome to my heartbreak
What other words can describe what I feel, what I felt when you told me it was over. My whole world collapsed with your words, your kisses, and your touch. I deeply felt that my world was ending because of you, Maria. I put everything in this; my future, my life, my heart.

Turning Money Into Gold
There was a window and above the windowpane on the wall wrote FAKE WINDOW in thick black letters. THE SCENERY IS FILM. I looked around at my other two options: an old wooden, cracked door with a black X on the frame and another door adjacent from the last was just as old and stained from dirt, but padlocked. If I take the door with the X would I be leading myself astray?

Thrift Store Karma
The book donations are Joy’s favorite to sift through. She liked getting first dibs at books she hadn’t read yet. Her manager was nice enough to let her have them since they would usually have to throw most of them away. The toys are the worst. They always needed to the most work. The job itself is not the greatest but she’s learned to live with it. A year in and she’s finally come to terms with the fact that for right now this is as good as it’s going to get, and at least it’s better than nothing. It could be worse, she’s heard real horror stories through the grapevine of former coworkers. Working at the thrift store isn’t so bad, you get used to the smell eventually, she’s found the backroom tasks are easier than the front with having to check people out. It’s shocking how many people try to haggle down the prices, there’s isn’t much wiggle room on a dollar item, but she knows times are tough for everyone so she tries not to judge or get frustrated.

Mary's Last Shift
There was nothing remarkable about the old woman who worked the admission counter at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. No one knew much about her except for the name listed on her name tag, Mary, and that she worked at that counter for decades. Co-workers assumed she must have had dire financial struggles since working a low-waged job for all those years couldn’t possibly be her choice. Many took notice of her peculiar habit of cycling through the same four different outfits, which some even had fun “betting” on which one she would wear that day. For those that worked alongside her, it was suspected that her health must have been poor due to a slight tremble, which became more pronounced through the years.

I Feel, Therefore I Am
When we are born into this world the planets take their positions in the sky, having a particular configuration which is unique to the individual in their specific location. Each planet has a different archetypal energy and they interact with each other according to their alignment at the time. These ingredients make up our natal chart, a cosmic recipe, with our own unique flavours.

Magical Mailman
It is seven in the morning when I open my eyes. I am feeling the grogginess of yet another restless night. It has been weeks since I last brushed my hair or decided to put any effort into my appearance. I desperately need a shower to refresh myself. But what is the point? This is just another meaningless day where I get to realize even more how far I’ve hit rock bottom. Ugh. Coffee. Coffee will be the perfect bandaid to my sorrow this morning.

I am one of six, the only girl with five brothers; 3 older, 2 younger; the princess you would call me, far from it. Now I do not want my writing to come across as if I am bashing my mother, we have never been in a great stance, but we’ve have come far from where we used to be, and I am grateful; for me to deliver my story, through my own perspective I need to write on my perspective at the time, and at the time I was a child.
