How to improve your communication skills

Six practical ways to Become a better communicator

By Endurance SadjerePublished about a year ago 3 min read

It's often said that communication is key. This is somewhat true as communication plays a crucial role in our relationship, career, and business success. Being an effective communicator, you can convey your thoughts and words in a positive and clear tone. Developing communication skills is pivotal to smooth and seamless interaction with people. Whether you're an employee, boss, parent, or young adult, you need to learn to communicate effectively for successful outcomes. Here's how to improve your communication skills.

Practice active listening

Good communicators are good listeners. Besides having good speaking skills, you should develop active listening. To be an active listener, you should pay rapt attention to the conversation and reply with affirmative replies. Don't be quick to reply or interject when the other person is still speaking. This is one skill I have taken out time to harness recently. Look into the eyes of the individual talking, and pay full attention to what they are saying. It works like magic, especially when they know you are actually listening to what they are saying.

Learn non-verbal communication

Body language matters a lot in communication skills. Pay attention to non-verbal signals like facial expressions, hand gestures, and posture. Maintain eye contact and limit hand gestures when the other person is speaking. Avoid fidgeting, crossing your arms, and slouching. Listen to the non-verbal cues from the other person. They might be trying to pass a message. These little details are what separates good communicators from the rest of the crowd.

Ask for honest feedback

It's no news that feedback helps you to make informed decisions. Ask your peers and colleagues for honest feedback regarding your communication skills. This will help you communicate better with people in your workplace while improving the relationship between you and them. There is always room for improvement when it comes to acquiring these communication skills and using them effectively.

Embrace feedback as an opportunity to grow and refine your communication skills. Not all feedback may be positive. Never get discouraged, when you get such feedbacks, as they are stepping-stones on your way to improving your communicaton skills.

Be brief and concise

Don't be monotonous with words. Be brief and specific, providing enough information for easy comprehension for others. Also, think about it: would you want to listen to a long story when you have a truckload of work to do? Be direct with your words, so you don't waste the other person's time. Let your words be concise and impactful as you aim to communicate effectively with friends, colleagues, and clients.

Don't play the blame card

Disputes are bound to occur. We're humans, and it's typical to get on one another's nerves. When you're in a tough situation or upset about something, ensure you keep your cool and address the issue. Don't blame the other individual. Placing accusations can spark conflicts and confrontations. This is a tough skill to acquire, but when properly harnessed, can be very useful in the long run.

Understand timing

Know when to crack jokes and when to be serious. If the atmosphere seems tense, you should consider telling some jokes to ease the tension. However, this depends on the situation or circumstances. Not every situation may call for jokes. Be sensitive to your environment and understand timing while communicating with others.

Gregory Davidson once penned: "To have good communication skills means you are able to make your point without a lot of fillers and stumbling." Communication helps better understanding, promotes clarity, and boosts work delivery, whether in the workplace or the business world. Make a conscious effort to communicate clearly with people around you.

Remember, effective communication is a lifelong learning process. By implementing these tips and consistently practicing, you can enhance your ability to connect, collaborate, and build strong relationships through communication.
