Be Boring

A Key To Success Most Miss And How To Overcome The Brain

Written by a human, for humans, always.

Many people look at my life...

And think that it must be extremely exciting all the time.

If you look solely at accomplishments...

I run my own business.

I designed the category of Sageship as a pathway to overcome the problems in the category of Leadership Development.

That led to me becoming a Hall of Fame Coach.

I am a Board Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner.

I designed the business model of Regenerative Legacy Design, which I have implemented in my own business and helped others implement successfully.

That led to contributing to humanitarian efforts around the world to reestablish ecosystems, mangrove forests, coral reefs, remove plastics from the oceans, and more.

I am a United Nations Representative with the recognized title of "His Excellency".

I have earned 3 doctorates (DFM, DNM, and DHM) and received 2 honorary doctorates (PhD hc, and DAS hc).

I have written daily articles for over 1,350 days in a row.

I have produced and hosted my own tv show and podcast.

I am a semi-professional athlete who has ran a mile or more for over 800 days in a row, mostly barefoot.

I have been on the covers of magazines and featured on a billboard in Times Square New York.

Most people see just a few of these and think...

My life must be crazy.

Here's the truth...

My life, for the most part, is really boring.

Are there crazy moments?

Absolutely.

But the vast majority of the time...

It is extremely boring.

I do mostly the same things every single day.

I develop my Faith.

I spend time with my wonderful spouse.

I write, edit, and publish an article.

I run at least a mile.

I research and study.

That is what I do every single day.

No exceptions.

Then, on most days...

I work with clients to help them achieve their goals and develop their Sageship...

And I build my business.

That is what the vast majority of my life looks like.

These same things...

Every day...

Every week...

Every month...

Every year.

There may be an event here, a vacation there, time with family and friends along the way...

Then some opportunity or recognition that I never imagined pops up...

But those are the rare exception...

Not the norm.

The norm is boring...

The same things...

Over...

And over...

And over again.

5 things that I do every day...

A couple more things that happen every week...

Repeated...

Repeated again.

Most people see success and they think it is just a constant series of large and exciting things that happen...

But the truth is that those only happen...

If you are dedicated to the boring.

If you want to be successful...

You need to be boring.

However...

This is where the challenge comes in for most people.

Boring is...

Boring.

Our brains, inherently, get tired of monotony.

They want excitement...

They want novelty...

They want to feel different emotions...

They want new experiences.

In many ways...

What happens for many people...

Is that their brains become the barrier to their success...

Chasing more exciting things...

But then...

Simultaneously...

Ignoring all the things that create true success...

Until everything they strive for...

Collapses...

Because they did not do what was boring.

So the question becomes...

How do we overcome the brain?

If the brain desires novelty...

But we need to do that which is boring...

What are we to do?

The answer is both simple...

And more complicated than it sounds.

You need to make the boring more novel.

You need to find creativity within the mundane.

You need to do the same things over and over again...

But find ways to challenge yourself within them.

For instance...

Every day I research...

But what I research changes from day to day.

Some days it is business...

Other days it is functional medicine...

Lately I've also been learning manual osteopathy and naprapathy...

Plus I also enjoy learning developments in psychology.

But every day I research.

Every day I write...

But what I am writing about changes within the context of Sageship.

Some days I am talking about success...

Others I am looking closely at psychophysiology...

Perhaps I am analyzing business decisions that leaders have made...

Or maybe I am feeling something more philosophical in nature.

But every day I write.

Every day I run...

But some days I am doing a mile as fast as I can...

Other days I am going slow and long for many miles...

Then some days I need to recover so I do a super slow mile...

And along the way I have different exercises that I do for the rest of my body.

But every day I run.

Your days can be both boring and novel at the same time.

If you do it correctly...

You should be able to enter into flow states multiple times a day...

The psychophysiological state where we feel and perform our absolute best...

All in different boring areas.

See...

Novelty is a flow trigger...

What allows us to more easily enter into flow...

And if we can unleash that trigger when we are doing the same things every day...

What at least sounds boring...

Does not really feel boring.

I do the same things every day...

And it looks and sounds boring...

But for me, internally, life does not feel boring...

Despite doing the same 5 things every day...

And a couple other things most days.

This is how you overcome the brain...

You need to figure out how to give the brain the stimulation it needs...

The novelty it seeks...

But in ways that allow you to do what sounds boring over and over again...

Things that are important to you living a full and successful life...

Without ever feeling bored with doing it.

So be boring...

But figure out how to do it in such a way that you never feel bored doing it...

Over and over again...

Every day.

When you apply this to what contributes to a meaningful life...

You will unlock more success than you could ever imagine.
