Are Your Flaws Hiding in Plain Sight?
Hiding From Parts of Yourself You Know are Negative
This post is about the things (habits, traits, etc) that you know are hurting you and/or others... the things you know are wrong with you; but you choose to ignore them or explain them away. We as humans have a selective blindness to the ugly or even disagreeable parts of ourselves. Why? Usually because it's just easier to dismiss something toxic than it is to face it head on and fix it. Human nature strikes again.
What Inspired This Post
As I told you in a recent post on here, I recently discovered that I have severe adult ADHD, and very shortly- if not immediately- I started to use it as an excuse for my continued downfall in life. It was easier to blame it all on the condition, which, honestly, most of it is because of the condition... but, the lack of fight I had to make it right, to make it better... that was on me. I didn't want to even know that, so doing something about it was out of the question to start with.
After I finally did allow myself to see what I was doing to myself, and why I was doing it, I began to think about all the other instances where we not only allow this to happen, but often times encourage it in one form or another. I'm talking about all the fights with people we care about that can be explained by foolish pride, the loads of things we don't accomplish in a day because we have a handy and often ready-made excuse for why we couldn't get to it. Or worse, why we shouldn't have to get to it. Yes, even the little habits that likely have a big impact on our lives, but we dismiss because we can. Because it's easy. Because we choose to.
Blind to What's In Front
Nearly every person walking around this planet is inherently blind to their own flaws, their own missteps, their own truth that is lacking. To be fair, perhaps it isn't by choice for everyone. Some people may have just never learned to see their own flaws or have never learned to look for where they may improve in their lives by way of their own actions or changes. At the end of the day though, a problem you either don't see, or refuse to see... remains a problem.
If your house is on fire and you sit in the living room and ignore it... you will still be burned, your house will still be ashes. Some people light the fires in their life and then turn their back to it. Then they bitch and complain and blame others for the heat. Many don't even realize they are doing it. Others know they are doing it, but choose to also ignore that they are even aware. Later they will tell themselves that there was nothing they could do. It just got away from them or it was just meant to be.
PAYING Attention
Have you ever thought about what "paying attention" means and implies? It's called paying attention, because it is a cost. You are giving time out of your life, which means that you are paying something to that person or that thing. Like most things, people don't like to pay anything. Maybe this is why so many of us refuse to pay attention even when it comes to paying attention to ourselves.
You have to pay the attention and time from your life that is needed to acknowledge the flaws you see in yourself, and then pay the effort and time that it takes to actually fix them. It seems expensive at first... but the solutions and the betterment that you purchase with this type of payment is one that will serve and benefit you more than anything you ever paid money for.
Think about it. Then do something about it.
