What’s cool about the Buddha is that he wasn’t always a Buddha. He was a regular person like you and me.

He worked hard to reach enlightenment so random guys like myself could write about him and share his message.

I’m sure that wasn’t his primary focus but it is a fabulous by-product nonetheless.

Buddha was once a man called Siddhartha Gautama who attained full enlightenment after many years of soul searching.

He then became known as the Buddha and birthed a spiritual discourse called Buddhism.

He famously (and rather stoically) did this by sitting under a tree for hours and hours and hours on the eve of his awakening with the purest of intentions: He was ready to find the answers to life's deepest questions and transcend suffering. Which he did.

He then became a fully enlightened being that spread his wisdom far and wide.

Here are some of my favourites.

“What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create”

Who could have ever imagined that the mysterious nature of the universe could be explained in as little as 15 words?

Thanks, Buddha!

“Three things can not hide for long: the Moon, the Sun and the Truth”

The moon and the sun proudly show themselves every day so why can’t the truth be?

And when it comes out in the end anyway, what’s the harm in bringing it out now?

“Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.”

Buddha also said:

“You will not be punished for your anger; you will be punished by your anger.”

In the end, we’re the only ones who get hurt.

“There is no path to happiness: happiness is the path”

There are only two choices in life really: Do we choose love or do we choose fear?

However, which one we choose ultimately determines our whole life.

The Buddha chooses love and I’m right with him.

“If you truly loved yourself, you could never hurt another”

That’s because when we love ourselves, we love the entire universe, from the smallest atom or bacterial growth to epic whales, trees, and stars.

“If you don’t go within, you go without” — Neale Donald Walsch

“If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly our whole life would change”

There are miracles everywhere. From the budding flower to the metamorphic genius of caterpillars, the mycelium network, every birth that has ever happened, and the fact that we live on a fiery ball of water that whizzes around space.

We are a part of that genius and we’re as magnificent and as beautiful as everything else.

“Don’t look for miracles, you yourself are the miracle” — Henry Miller

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without”

Peace is a superpower that can be cultivated. When we choose peace we simultaneously choose radical acceptance and forgiveness.

It’s definitely the harder and more challenging of paths to take but should that stop us from trying?

The Buddha chose to sit under a tree until he found it.

Find your way.

To recap:

  • Your thoughts create reality.

“What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create”

  • Don’t be shy to speak your truth.

“Three things can not hide for long: the Moon, the Sun and the Truth”

  • Anger only hurts the person holding it.

“Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned”

  • Choose love. Always.

“There is no path to happiness: happiness is the path”

  • Love yourself to love the world

“If you truly loved yourself, you could never hurt another”

  • See the miracles of everyday life everyday.

“If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly our whole life would change”

  • Cultivate peace within.

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without”
