It’s Easier Than You Think.

It’s important now more than ever that we encourage not only ourselves, but others around us to take a real good look in the mirror and evaluate how we are operating in our day-to-day lives.

With so many people turning to online ordering or only ordering from Amazon, small businesses are in jeopardy and they need your support. Today I challenge you to look within your community for things that you might need rather than ordering something on an auto-renewing subscription each month.

Here are 7 ways to help support local businesses within your community:

Take a Local Class

Instead of taking some self-paced online courses for your studies, considered taking a class in your community. This can be anything from fitness classes to cooking classes, and even dog training classes.

Not only is it a good way to get out of the house, but you’d also be supporting a small business while you’re at it.

Hire a Local to Clean Out the Gutters (Or Anything for That Matter)

It’s very tempting to call the very first place business you find on Google with the highest reviews when you need something done around the house. But I’d like to challenge you to find someone who runs a small business to help you out.

Chances are they can get the job done the same if not better than that brick-and-mortar business and who knows they may even give you a discount. Remember, bigger doesn’t always mean better.

Share Your Favorite Local Businesses With Your Friends on Social Media

Do you have a favorite mom-and-pop shop that you like to go to? Visit them and then go on social media and tell your friends how awesome they are. Don’t forget to tag them while you’re at it.

This is a great way to support local businesses and help give back to your community without it costing an arm and a leg, because let’s be honest, you were going to eat there anyway!

Visit Your Local Farmer’s Market

Farmer’s Markets are one of the best ways to support your local businesses. It’s almost like they were created just for them. They’re a fun way to get out of the house, learn about new products and crafts, and give back to the community while doing it.

If there aren’t any Farmer’s Markets in your area, trade shows and craft fairs will provide a similar experience.

Leave Positive Reviews

Just like you would share a post on social media, leaving local businesses reviews on platforms like Google and Yelp go a long way too. Be the person who has something positive to say, even if things didn’t go as planned.

Donate to a Small Business in Need

Some small businesses, like this soon-to-be local pop up shop (spoiler alert, it’s mine & I could use your help spreading the word!), need help with donations in order to get started. Even if you can’t give a financial donation, consider helping your local businesses with other things they might need. Instead of dropping that unwanted stuff off at Goodwill, look within your community to see who may be able to use it first.

Tip When You Can

Not everyone can tip for their services all of the time. But if you can afford to tip someone who just did an amazing job doing something for you, especially if they’re a small business owner, then you should do that. After all, they are doing you a favor.

I'm curious to know, do you support local businesses in your area? What's your favorite way to be supportive? If you don't support local businesses, how will you start supporting them this year?
