What Is Equanimity and How Can We Achieve It?

Equanimity is a state of composure that most people want to achieve but aren’t sure of the steps they need to take. When cultivating equanimity in your daily life, you become more emotionally stable, optimistic, and calm, even when you’re experiencing difficulties that would cause most people to lose their cool, get worked up, and possibly even overreact. Those who master the art of equanimity have the upper hand because they’ve discovered how to control their thoughts and feelings, remain at ease, and avoid latching on to negative thoughts, feelings, and situations. And, while it may take time to get to that point of feeling so incredibly calm, there are several techniques you can use to achieve the mental calmness you desire.

Use the Power of Meditation

Never underestimate the power that meditation can have on your mindset. Whether you’re new to the world of meditation or not, a few minutes alone with your eyes closed can instantly leave you feeling more at ease and one with your thoughts and feelings. Start meditating often enough to relieve yourself of unwanted negativity and stress. The best thing about meditation is that you can do it anywhere, whether you’re at work, at home, or even riding as a passenger in a vehicle with loved ones. A few minutes per day can improve your mindset and provide you with feelings of calmness that can change your life for the better.

Take Deep Breaths When Dealing with Difficult Situations

It’s easy to feel the urge to overreact to a problematic situation. We can hear or see something we don’t like and suddenly feel anger and frustration that causes us to lash out at others, which is the opposite of equanimity. If you want to change how you react to situations, including those that are the most trying and difficult for you, use meditation to keep you calm and start taking deep breaths. The proper breathing techniques can relieve you of those unwanted feelings of anxiety and frustration that contribute to anger.

Keep a Journal

Start keeping track of how you feel by writing in a journal. When you’re journaling, you’re expressing your thoughts and feelings on paper, letting anger and frustration leave the body, and transforming your life for the better. It’s the small changes you make to your daily routine that can help you become a calmer and more optimistic person who looks on the bright side instead of assuming the worst and always thinking negatively.

Practice Self-Care

Be kind to yourself and practice self-care. It can be anything that makes you feel good, such as watching a movie with your family, doing yoga for 30 minutes per day, going for a jog outside in the nice weather, or even painting a picture. Find the things that you enjoy most and do them as part of your daily self-care routine. When you take better care of yourself, you can get in the right mindset and achieve equanimity.

Most people don’t want to go through the rest of life feeling anxious, angry, and frustrated all the time. However, not knowing how to control your emotions and change your mindset could prevent you from experiencing calm within yourself. If you want to achieve equanimity and react better to all situations that arise, you can achieve it through meditation, journaling, self-reflection and self-care, and breathing techniques.
