Do I Remember

Ask me in December

after the leaves are gone

and the rains have begun, when

above us floats a gray silk sky, thick in the middle

and an aching heart wants blue breaks, wishes for

any small crack in that gray sheen

Deeper desire, the

dream is of

December, no, before December

Ask me in December

What do I remember?

Coming home in the Spring to

Green trees leafed out the week we were gone

Bald Eagles perching on their nest and

tree frogs croaking in the back,

unseen but always heard.

Violet Green Swallows soaring over the street,

and my sadness when the babies flew from their nest

without a goodbye, every mid-July.

Driving in the mountains,

walking in the forest

vistas of purple and orange mountain wildflowers.

The Seagulls soaring over the waves

while the ferry sailed to and fro.

Ask me in December,

Do I remember?

Yes, I remember,

before December.

I remember your sweet kisses

in all the months,

before December took you.

Stunning poem! I relate so much to feeling sad when spring and summer end! (Especially summer!) The cold weather always gives me the blues. Your words are beautifully strung together here!

This is a sad but very warming poem. I always feel sad when summer and spring disappear; though I love December, I hate the chill of Winter.

    Wow this was absolutely beautiful!

  • The colors of the flowers, the movements of wildlife, so gloriously vivid. Such a contrast with the heavy dull gray of the beginning of the poem, which it circles back to in that Wham of a line at the end. A wonderful contribution to Bab's challenge!
