Trying to lose weight is hard. Whether you want to lose five pounds or fifty, it's a challenge. New diets seem to be popping up every other week, so how do you know which one is right for you? While many of these diets work well for some people, they aren't all right for everyone. During your journey toward a healthier lifestyle, consider implementing these methods to boost your metabolism and help you shed those pounds.

Exercise

Even though the majority of weight loss occurs due to diet, adding in regular exercise can increase the amount of weight you lose. Physical activity is also great for your overall health. Although any exercise is helpful, consider trying intervals during your cardio training. Continuously raising and lowering your heart rate can help you burn more calories. Incorporating strength training will allow you to build more muscle mass. Adding more lean muscle to your body can help you to burn more calories throughout the day, therefore boosting the amount of weight you lose.

Add Protein

If you're looking to boost your metabolism and lose more weight, protein is the way to go. You've probably heard by now that carbohydrates, especially simple ones, are not the best thing to eat when dieting. Cutting back on carbs and eating more protein is very beneficial. Your protein does not have to come from a meat source though. Eggs are another great source of protein, and some of the best protein powder is plant based.

Drink Coffee

One of the main ingredients in many weight loss pills is caffeine. Instead of taking the pills, consider consuming black coffee instead. It may actually help boost your metabolism and allow you to burn more calories throughout the day. Too much caffeine can be dangerous though, so do not exceed the recommended daily amount.

Cut the Sugar

It's important to learn to read labels before trying to lose weight. Many foods may seem healthy, but actually contain many added ingredients that could hinder your weight loss. Sugar is not just in sweets. Many savory items contain a heaping amount of the sweetener as well. You might want to consider using a weight loss app to help you track the food you eat. Most of them allow you to type in the food you want to eat and the app will tell you how much sugar, protein, carbohydrates and calories it contains.

Hydrate

Staying hydrated is especially important when trying to lose weight. Sometimes the body doesn't understand the difference between hunger and thirst, so you may feel hungry when in fact you just need a glass of water. Staying hydrated can make you feel fuller and help you eat less. Try drinking a glass of water before every meal. The recommended amount per day is at least eight glasses, but there is no reason you shouldn't consume more.

Portion Control

Although the meal is made for one person, portions don't always reflect that. This is especially true if you eat out a lot. Restaurants want to make sure you get what you pay for, so they serve enough food for two on a plate that is meant for one. Instead of consuming the entire meal, consider boxing half of it up before you even start. This can take away the temptation to keep eating even when you aren't hungry. You can also split a meal with someone, which will help you wallet as well as your waist line.

Before you embark on your weight loss journey, consult your physician. It is important to lose weight in a healthy way. Changing your lifestyle and habits can help ensure you keep the weight off in the long run as opposed to crash dieting. Consider finding friends or family members that are also looking to lose a few pounds to go through this journey with you. It will be hard at first, but once you've changed your habits it will become second nature.
