Self Care for Everyday

Little things that make a big difference

Today I want to talk about self care. We are a generation of do-ers. We run around from work to home life and sometimes forget to stop and take time for ourselves. In fact even when we have a spare hour or two we are tidying or catching up on the long list of things that needs to be done and seems never ending as we are constantly adding more and more to the list.

The problem with this is that it often leads to illness, stress, tiredness and burnout. However, by taking some simple steps daily we can help our bodies recover and heal from the busyness of life. When we start taking care of ourselves we make better choices, including eating better and paying more attention to ourselves.

When we have a simple daily self care routine it is much easier to stick to being good to ourselves. Here are my top 8 self care tips for every day.

1: Take Vitamins – such a simple thing but it’s amazing how often this can be forgotten. Taking vitamins helps your body work and feel good. This is especially important if your general diet does not include all the vitamins and minerals that you need.

2: Get a good amount of sleep – Sleep is vital for your body to work properly. Without a good amount of sleep we cannot think and focus. In fact if we don’t get a good amount of sleep we can often feel more down and stressed.

3: Drink plenty of water – Like sleep, water is needed for the body and its organs to work properly. Dehydration can cause lack of focus and low energy levels. Try to drink at least 8 glasses a day. We need far more water than we need food. In fact you can go three weeks without food but only three days without water.

4: Meditate – Daily stresses can take its toll on our bodies. Meditating for just 10 minutes a day can be very beneficial to give our bodies and brains a break from the stress and revive us. This might simply mean setting a timer for ten minutes, closing your eyes and concentrating on your breath for ten minutes without disturbance.

5: Make an effort to look good – Whether we feel like it or not getting up and making an effort with our appearance makes us feel better. When we look good we feel good and this boosts our confidence. So even if you are having a day in the house put a little make-up on or do your hair. It will work wonders.

6: Get some fresh air – Fresh air has a way of washing away our stresses and problems. If you are having a stressful day getting some fresh air and breathing deeply can calm us and help us see things more clearly. If you don’t have a little garden you can sit in then go for a walk around the block.

7: Write down 3 things you are grateful for – Thinking positively makes us feel good. A great way to set this mindset in motion is to list what we are grateful for. Do this in the morning to set you on a positive path for the rest of the day and do it again before bed to ensure you go to bed in a positive head space.

8: Listen to music – Music makes us happy. So listen and sing along to your favourites it’s surprising what a wonderful boost this can give you.

Most of all enjoy these little self care rituals and look after yourself.
