Menopause Mayhem!

The past revisited.

For all the non menopausal women out there, when you hear the word 'menopause', what image does that word invoke for you? The chances are, the reality of it is entirely different!

When you break it down, it is almost like hitting puberty in reverse! The onslaught of hormone surges and chemical imbalances take the most rational of minds to that of a petulant child! It is intolerable at times, yet worryingly curious. Being of quite a scientific mind, I have made good use of my frequent insomnia *yes another huge factor of the menopause* and attempt to rationalise the entire process of the reverse coming of age, hence my reference of puberty in reverse! I find the worst thing one can do during a menopausal cycle, I refer to it as a cycle as I find mine isn't a constant but rather a series of flares or cycles, is to allow your stress levels to raise, the cortisol released into your system whilst in a cycle feels very much like a huge shot of steroids! This also has a destructive effect on the already rapidly depleting oestrogen causing the symptoms to increase significantly. My Dave deserves a medal as a boyfriend as partners often get the shitty end of the stick too! The constant chemical fluctuations obviously have an effect on the body systemically and the contraindications range from muscular cramps and discomfort to subtle mood changes and extreme changes in temperature. So by confiding in my Dave I was rationalising my change in emotional mood and raging temperatures mainly nocturnal. Support is paramount during the menopause and the best form of support is that from your partner!!! It isn't all doom and gloom mind! If you look at it logically for what it really is, you can almost brace yourself and work through the worst of menopausal symptoms, and, dare I say it, diet plays a paramount role in reducing symptoms. Sugary cravings are a trap! Chocolate worsens hot flushes massively for example, as do energy drinks, so avoiding these would be very sensible during a cycle of misery! Those fortunate enough to be able to take HRT medications in whatever form, as there are many, should muddle through relatively unscathed, but the rest (including myself) that are unable to for various reasons, can ease symptoms through diet. A diet rich in vitamins such as fresh spinach leaves (spinach contains small amounts of Oestrogen), fresh fish, limited meats high in protein such as red meats, chicken and certain unseasoned nuts can reduce the worst of the symptoms. Finally, a sharp witted sense of humour aids the process and strengthens the mental health. Good luck all!
