I never thought of how environmental wellness could affect my personal wellness. However, it turns out that our environment, and how we feel about it can have a huge impact on the way we feel. I don't just mean your immediate personal surroundings, but also your relationship with the planet and nature.

Cleaning your room and/or keeping your desk organized

It can be as simple as taking care of our possessions in our homes, but it doesn't stop there, don't forget about your car and workplace. When our personal surroundings are clean and organized, it not only can cause a sense of comfort, but it can also reduce anxiety.

Mother Earth

Environmental wellness also involves caring for and appreciating nature. This means living in harmony with your surroundings, respecting the earth, and thinking about future generations.

Environmental wellness can be summarized in five key ideas:

  1. Caring for the environment
  2. Sustainability (meeting the needs of the present without compromising the environment for future generations)
  3. Protection of our resources
  4. Going green (reduce, reuse, recycle) Get crafty and try Up-cycling!
  5. Living in harmony with our surroundings

How Does It Look In Everyday Life?

Everyday you have the opportunity to make environmental conscious decisions. Here are some examples of small ways to contribute to the cause.

  • Home—Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth.
  • School—Join an environmental group if your school offers one, or start one!
  • Work—Pack a garbage-less lunch; go "paperless" if possible.
  • Commuting—Walk, bike, carpool, take public transit.
  • Community/society—Set an example for neighbors, discuss your positive choices with family to encourage them.

Why Is Environmental Wellness Important?

Environmental wellness includes your connection to nature, and your own personal environment. It’s hard to feel good when your space is messy or disorganized. It's also connected to other domains of wellness.

Connection to Other Types of Wellness

  • Emotional Wellness Caring for our homes and other personal environments also helps us maintain a sense of personal care. It reminds us that we love ourselves, which is great for emotional wellness too.
  • Spiritual Wellness Connecting with nature can help you feel more connected spiritually as well, leading to a greater understanding of what spiritual wellness means to you. When you look at the world on such a broad scale, it’s hard not to get a sense of the “bigger picture.”

Hello. Nice to meet you! How are you? Hmm... this feels like a really one-sided conversation... why don't you follow me on social media so I can get to know you too!

It would be really awesome if you join the adventure and maybe even help me think of what to write about next. If you would like to submit some feedback or ideas, you can always tweet me on Twitter.
