Drinking a glass of water can be a perfect time to have a quick break if you do it mindfully.

You may be amazed by the positive impact this can have on you. And, as drinking water is something you do many times every day, you can gain many simple and frequent moments to calm your mind.

Let’s drink a glass of water, mindfully?

Notice the glass

Start by looking at the glass of water you will be using.

Just look at it.

Don’t think about anything else now, just observe this simple glass of water.

Don’t try to label it, to attach any concepts to it (like thinking if it’s a fancy glass or an old glass, etc.).

Right now, it’s just a glass of water, and it’s the only object that matters at this moment.

Give it your full attention.

Notice it has a shape, and it has space inside, an empty space.

And it’s that emptiness that makes it useful for you.

It’s that empty space that makes it important now, that allow you to use it to contain precious water, an essential component for your life.

So, just look at the glass,

Notice the shapes, the color, or colors of the glass. Maybe it has one color on the outside and a different color on the inside,

Notice that.

Hold the glass

Now hold your glass, and see how it feels in your hands.

Is it light or heavy?

How do you hold it?

Using one or two fingers, or holding it with your hands?

Is it warm, or is it cold?

How does it feel in our hands?

Notice that.

Drink some water

Slowly, bring the glass to your mouth and drop a bit of water in your mouth.

Don’t swallow it immediately.

Notice how the water feels in your mouth.

Does it have a taste?

Is it cold, or hot?

Notice that.

Drink the water you need, always slowly, and noticing all the details about it and about how you are doing it.

Be grateful

Once you finish drinking the water, slowly put down the glass on the table in front of you.

Look at it again, and be grateful.

Be grateful for the beautiful and amazing drink you just had.

It brings life to your body.

Be grateful for that.

Notice that.

Now you can go back to what you have to do, after enjoying these simple moments you have just made your own.

Evaluate and repeat

If this exercise has a good impact on you, remember it’s something you can use several times during the day, use it.

It’s another simple way to create moments of calm in your daily life, it’s another way to appreciate life.

A way to be grateful for all the wonderful things we enjoy during the day and not always notice.

That is the key point — to notice.

When you notice things, you focus your attention on only one thing for some moments — and in these moments you can rest and enjoy life more.

Allow your waters to flow

Water is an essential element of life and has several similarities with the way our emotions behave, as JoyBell explains in this wise words:

“Anger is like flowing water; there's nothing wrong with it as long as you let it flow. Hate is like stagnant water; anger that you denied yourself the freedom to feel, the freedom to flow; water that you gathered in one place and left to forget. Stagnant water becomes dirty, stinky, disease-ridden, poisonous, deadly; that is your hate. On flowing water travels little paper boats; paper boats of forgiveness. Allow yourself to feel anger, allow your waters to flow, along with all the paper boats of forgiveness. Be human.”
