Stitching Stories
When I first discovered embroidery at fifteen, I stitched on thin cotton with the friendship bracelet thread and safety scissors from my childhood. Then, as I grew in my abilities, my craft aged with me. When I picked up an embroidery hoop and clamped the thick, new, special fabric inside, my fingers began to push and pull the needle. I followed the threads, sometimes without looking or thinking, and created imagery with meaning. I never followed a pattern; the creations were of my own making. Embroidery is an act of repetition and precision, and sometimes, with the right intentions, it is elevated through symbolism. I soon realized that to engage in a traditionally domestic craft in a creative way is subversive to patriarchal norms and expectations of femininity and yet also honors the work of our foremothers. I thought about the ways craft is passed down through generations, and through hoops and scissors, too.

While many view it as an elderly pastime, crochet has seen a revival in the fashion industry over the last few years and has become the cornerstone of my heart. What started as an anxiety soothing activity, has now become a full-time business for me and I do not see that changing anytime soon. So, in these lines I will detail my love affair with needle and yarn, and present the project I feel represents the culmination of my 2 years of learning this craft.

Kristina SteffyPublished 3 years ago in JournalHow Did I Get Here Again?
I had no idea what was going to happen when I made the first one. I was just doing a favour for a friend. But I guess all the best stories are born out of an act of love. My friend was finally marring her high school sweet heart and she was completely absorbed in planning the wedding day. But when it came to finding a cake topper that represented her and her fiancé, she was disappointed. Every little figure she found had a tall, thin, blonde bride with a long, puffy dress and an equally bland groom. My friend is short in stature, with curly brown hair, glasses and a distinctly shorter and beautifully unique dress.

FABRIC ONLY. It's written in all caps just like that. It's meant to be shouted. Don't hold back. If you see this particular pair of scissors in a custom picture framing shop, beware. The employee, in charge of the expensive textiles, is not messing around. They put that label on the blade for a reason: The scissors must remain clean. They must remain sharp. They mustn't fray the fabric. Respect.

Like so many of us during the Spring of 2020, I had a lot of time on my hands during lock-down. I have always had a passion for creating, and because I was now working remotely, I decided to put my free time to good use. I had just created a new painting and it was by far my best one yet. However, creating my best painting required me to cut off canvas from other frames to use.

Mindsmatter.Published 3 years ago in JournalWhat You Write With
For a lot of writers, writing is as much about their level of comfort as it is the actual writing process. Some writers can tell you, at length, about the process. The process is as much about the writing as it is about the writing tool. I have known writers who are so temperamental about their writing implements, that they have them organized better than their filing cabinets. Hence the picture above.

Have you ever looked at a sewing machine? Really looked at a sewing machine? The way that machine is engineered is fascinating. Like a car, all the elements are essential. A tool that cannot be separated from the pattern and the thread. It’s always the sounds that bring you back.
