How to NOT make Money on Vocal.media

Simple Strategies to Guarantee Failure

This article provides many of the tips used to guarantee you, as a writer, will not succeed at making money on Vocal.media.

Use only AI generated content for one, or all, of your articles

  • This is the quickest way of turning readers away from your content, as it’s really quite insulting to genuine writers who take the time and work hard at their craft.
  • Spam the comments section of other articles with your links

  • Right up there with offering only AI content, such poor manners will get you reported, removed and unread. It will not gain meaningful engagement.
  • Poor formatting

    • Alienating the reader by offering them a work that is unpleasant to read - ie. Large blocks of text, all caps or no caps, really bad grammar and punctuation.
    • This is inexcusable, but an easy way to turn off potential readers.

    Not responding/engaging

    • People took the time to read your stuff and respond, the least you could do is politely respond with a “Thank you” - if you continue to not respond, you will lose readers.

    Doing NO promotion

    • Readers aren’t likely to just find your work hanging out in the virtualverse - if you want people to see your words, and, therefore, earn reads, you will have to make the effort to post your stuff to groups, or wherever - it takes some work and experimentation to find what works, or doesn't.
    • Or post your link to groups willy-nilly and leave, with no engagement or response to readers who do take the time to click on your links, is another good strategy to make sure you don't build an audience.

Relating no interest in acquiring knowledge to improve as a writer

    • Arrogance is not an endearing trait - in order to be taken seriously as a writer and continue to garnish reads, you’ll need to show some authenticity in the desire to improve in your craft.

Not taking efforts to know or grow your audience

    • Developing your audience through efforts of authentic engagement gives you a built-in readership. Keep ignoring people, or producing poor quality or inauthentic content to keep your audience low.

Ignore other writers - here are 3 obnoxious ways to do that:

  • Don’t read their stuff.
  • Don’t lift them up through shares, shout-outs, or encouragement.
  • Subscribe to them inauthentically.
  • Basically, projecting a selfish persona is going to work against you in every way in the name of success. Remember your manners and they will help you go far as writer, or in aspiring to achieve any goal.

Vocal is not a scam, but it does take effort on your own to come out ahead, either financially or personally.

This is my response to the barrage of “get-rich-quick” schemers on Vocal lately, and those who keep claiming Vocal must be scam, because the creator isn’t making money. The truth is, it takes effort and time to grow successful as a writer. Who am I? Am I a successful Vocal writer? That depends on your definition of success - if it’s all about the financial aspect, my game is improving - I make enough monetarily to cover my membership.

You can practice committing to being a better writer here by engaging in the comment section, actually reading the story, not supplying links unless asked or very related, and subscribing to me because you mean it. If you are authentic, I will look up your profile and give a read or two.

KJ, I love this!!! So much truth and so exquisitely written!! I love the perspective you chose with this and the foreboding sort of feeling this has, something like "cross me and find out what happens. I dare you!" Great work!!

Well said, and it remains relevant no matter when it is read. It is not just writing to make money here, it is reading, encouraging. lifting someone else up even when you feel down. But most of all, one has to be willing to learn from others. My writing started out very immature-ish and not so good. I learned a lot being here, I feel that I have grown 200% in reading, writing and doing research for the challenges. People should write from the heart, it is the best way to be authentic and believable.

    • How can i start writing more meaningful content that is going to help readers on the internet.

I'm not successful yet (so far I have 2 reads = have made 1 cent, lol!), but at least I'm not doing this stuff haha! So this was quite encouraging, thank you :)

I've been sitting on a piece a lot like this. It's called, "Why I didn't subscribe". All the things that turn me off and make me not want to read their content. You laid it all out very eloquently, I don't think I can top this 😁

Thankyou for this article. I wish I had it as a newbie years ago. I so struggle with creative encouragement.

    • Great compilation and explanations. Congratulations on Top Story!

You might wanna add "people who spam comments with inauthentic niceties, having the similar comments spread everywhere." I've seen many accounts do this in the top story section too many times. Heck, some of them will even go as far as to make a comment that reads about the title, but doesn't have anything revolving around the article's general premise at all. I got a hunch that some are even using AI to generate replies to sound authentic as well when they're caught in the act. Goodness, I've seen "all true words," "nice article," awesome," etc. etc. copied and pasted on tons of articles. Some will even carry on from the top story community and continue to comment on at least one or two of Your other works to come off as genuine.

Absolutely the best ways not to make money on vocal, also great ways to alienate people and make them ignore you on vocal. Spot on, well written and amusing. Love it! I wouldn't normally do this but would you read my piece Ursulas Tale and tell me if it could be considered young adult please? Only if you have the time and inclination. Here is a link: https://vocal.media/fiction/ursula-s-tale Thank you I would really value your opinion.

Hi KJ - I find that VM has provided me/us with a gorgeous platform for us to 'Market' our goods for $10 bucks a month; such a bargain. They are not in the business of 'Selling Us' to prospective followers - they even give us much latitude to do so - as of course you've noticed. You're a terrific StoryTeller - Credible perseverance works with any career those may choose. You Talk to your Readers - Thank you for this, KJ JB

This is a great article! I think it is also super important to add that Vocal.media is a storytelling platform. If one is interested in writing to publish vocal is a great place to practise and get ideas. Even Vocal.Media states that they are a storytelling platform (at least in regards to their creative challenges). And of course storytelling can involve writing but a person can also have a great story that isn't written "well" (as that is a bit subjective). And a person can also have "great" writing but "fall flat" in the story department. I'm only adding this comment because when I started vocal (not too long ago) I thought it was a writing platform first and foremost. I think Vocal is a great place for learning how to tell a story but, for learning how to write creatively a person may want some other resources! Best of luck to everyone out there!!

Interesting thoughts. Is this based on the experience of having made a lot of money here? It would help the reader to believe you if you could share how much money you've actually earned here as a writer....

Reading this made me think of something I wrote a few weeks ago titled if you link bomb, you’re a twat. This is a worthy top story!
