Just Quit Talking! About "How to Make Money on Vocal.media"

Another Rant from the Aquarian Journal

This platform is for creators, not schemers.

I mean, if I see one more article regarding the various ways to “Make Money on Vocal.media,” I think I might be ill. Challenges, reads, blah, blah, blah …

Yes, it’s nice to make money, and you can do so on this platform, but the chance of making loads of cash is slim. This platform is not a scam, but it’s no get-rich-quick scheme, either. Effort and authenticity are needed to make spending time here worthwhile.

Many new-to-the-platform writers are lured into writing for the Vocal platform by the thought of making money. I was one of them. But I quickly learned the greater value offered here to serious creators than money alone, includes the value of developing a voice, a skillset, a profile, camaraderie, confidence. All required skills for making money in any endeavor. This one happens to be about writing.

This platform is about developing our craft so that we have the potential to make money. It’s not about finding a fast and easy way to make money. Creators soon learn that fact. Some stick around, some don’t. The one’s who stick around are the writer’s who quickly learned the value the platform has to offer in the form of practice, building skills, finding an audience, etc. And some even make a bit of cash! Overall, the writers who stick around are the ones serious about the writing. They value the idea of taking the skills learned here out into the world, after developing a strategy to use their gift to earn a living. Vocal.media is a part of the toolbox for creating a successful career, not the entire array. And it shouldn’t be.

Those whose first objective is to get-rich-quick leave relatively quickly upon the realization that acquiring the dollar signs dancing before their eyes, takes more than using spam and AI.

This platform is about a person’s development as a creator, it’s not about engaging with those who are insincere. It is about about creators who are serious about improving, engaging and encouraging other writers. People who are only here for the possibility of cashing in, are disrespectful to the work of creators on the platform. By spamming links, or making disingenuous requests for writers to read their work, is insulting the efforts of those of us who are serious about writing. Wasting our time and making a mockery of the writers on this platform is only a fast way to ruin your reputation. First, within the relatively small community of writers, but also within a larger demographic of building a business. Your efforts are damaging, rather than enhancing, your character.

The point of this rant is to remind all creators to rethink your focus for writing. If your answer is “to make money” than you aren’t likely to get very far in achieving that goal by writing. If it’s more along the lines of “because I have something to say,” than you just might be able to earn some money from your efforts.

Quit talking - start writing (AI is not writing) - put your money where your voice is. If your biggest goal is to make a buck, you will not find success with Vocal.media worth your while. If you’re looking for an opportunity to develop your creative skills, the addition of your voice will be embraced.

Thank you for reading! What is your essential purpose for writing, or spending time, on Vocal.media? What are the greatest benefits to you as a creator?

Benefits to me are a supportive community and the growth that the community has helped with!

Yup! The idea of making money from doing the thing I love as a single mother struggling to make ends meet brought me here. The disappointment of no one reading or caring about my stuff made me walk away. My love for writing, desire to still share my work and realization that I was not going to get rich and famous here brought me back again....

I think the allure of the potential for income has had most of us fantasising at some point. But you are right, if a person is a serious writer, they are not here for the money.

Good points, well made. Vocal is a great way to improve your writing skills and has a lovely community. Money has to be a secondary consideration.

  • The greatest benefits to me are pretty much what you've detailed here, KJ, with the exception that, while I wouldn't mind making a few bucks by doing so, the primary benefits of being here for me are getting better at saying what I have to say & having a community with which to share it (who will help me get better).

I agree, of course! But let's be honest for a second, the culprits won't read your rant. They do not care. They move from one site to the next, re-using the same content that once made them money. They just change the name of the platform to fit their needs. I suspect they moved here from Medium, after Medium's announcement that it would finally return to its initial goal of promoting quality content. They are no longer welcome there, so they are trying their hands at Vocal. But we all know they will fail. (I haven't read anything on Medium in a while, due to the spam that is published and promoted there. I hope things will change soon.) Basically, I block spammers on Facebook and report them here. That's simple.
