Leon Stevens, Author, interviews Leon Stevens, Reader
After several interviews on some websites after the release of my first book, Lines by Leon: Poems, Prose, and Pictures, I decided to work on my comedic writing and explore how an author might interview a reader. Since there were no volunteers—and I just happened to be in the room—the self interview was born!

I recently had the opportunity to ask her about our evolving cultural values around childhood, what good early educational environments look like, and how we can resist the tendency to “adultify” young children. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Call Me Les Interview Index
When co-creating the Vocal Creators Chronicle, I knew immediately that I wanted to dedicate my space to interviews. Inspired partly by Oprah, and partly by Humans of New York, I'm only beginning to tackle my goal of creating a cross-section of humanity. I started with my fellow creators while I awaited for various external subjects to complete their questionnaires.

Urologic Surgeon and Author, Dr. Oneeka Williams:
The difference between being successful and fulfilling your life's purpose isn't one of degree; it's an entirely different feeling. You can work hard to achieve all the goals society has set for you, but if that doesn't satisfy what makes me feel alive, then nothing will truly make up for missing out on this life's greatest gift: Finding our true selves through exploration comes through stepping out on faith. This is something Dr. Oneeka Williams, the urologic surgeon turned author, knows about all too well.

"Thank you for being here to meet me!" "Your welcome." "Do you often come here?" "Yes, as often as I can. As a matter of fact I come here when I need to be alone."

Being hired as a war correspondent I assumed I would be on, or at least close, to the front lines. Instead, I have been shipped to Britain to interview a writer. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Kyra Chambers' writing, but I hoped to be with the soldiers. I would have been if I didn't have epilepsy. So, I turned to journalism.

"Just as we are more than the sum of our parts, the definition of who we are is more than just a singular moment in time. We are multi-faceted, and so are our life-defining moments." - Anthony Stauffer
Lena FolkertPublished 2 years ago in InterviewWriting Talk With Melissa Ingoldsby
When I am a fan of an author, I love to know what inspires them, what drives them. In the Facebook group Vocal Writers Sharing Group, we are playing a game called “Not My Shoes”, where we are paired up with someone randomly, and we interview each other and write a piece about it. (If you are not in that group, you should be. Everyone who participates in the games sees a sharp increase in their reads, and it is a very safe, open, and welcoming group. You can find that group here.) I was paired with Melissa Ingoldsby. If you aren’t familiar with her work, you have probably seen her posting and interacting with other Vocal creators in the Facebook Vocal groups, offering encouragement, feedback, and interaction along the way. You can find her Vocal profile here.

The ‘Not My Shoes’ interview idea was a stroke of genius. It’s why I volunteered my time to participate in this second round of interviews. I got lucky… I only knew Lena Bean through her writing. Don’t get me wrong, her writing is poignant, thoughtful, and moving. Solely grading her humanity based on her writing already gives her high marks; but to learn about who she truly is has been a journey. I wanted to ask questions that would put her into introspection mode, to give us all a chance to see the real Lena. As a result, I’m going to share what she told me at the very end of the interview, as it gives us a great peek into who she is, and what you can expect from this interview. “Thank you for these questions,” she said, and I imagine a look of exhausted relief. “I needed them today. They helped me to feel grounded and to process things that are going on. As I said before, I know I write too much which is why I always hate my autobiographical works, so trim what and where you need.” Let me say this, Lena, I haven’t trimmed anything yet. I’m writing this pragmatically, so you can expect our readers to see most, if not all, of each of your answers. Thank you, Lena, for this chance to show you off!
