Disturbing video posted to TikTok by a grieving mother showing what appears to be her dancing while holding a dead baby in her arms was viewed more than 10 million times before the social network site removed the video.

Stillborn Baby Video Posted to TikTok

The woman went by the user name @lex.isssss and had over 24,000 followers. She documented her pregnancy journey through videos posted to TikTok. When baby Keh’lani arrived stillborn, she wanted to share this moment- and her grief- with those who had been with her the entire nine months.

The TikTok’er posted the video in May 2021 showing herself walking around with the dead baby, lip-syncing a few songs playing in the background. She captioned the video by saying, “Let me cope in peace pls.” She urged her followers to let her deal with the loss of her child the best way that she knew how. She continued, “I am this close to falling off the deep end. I know I am smiling right now, but the light inside me is dying.”

The account has since been deleted.

TikTok users were disturbed by the video and immediately reported it for “violent and graphic content.” TikTok initially said the video did not “violate our community guidelines,” but after a news station approached the owners of the app, they deleted the video.

A spokesperson for TikTok issued a statement saying`

"These videos are clearly heartbreaking and out deepest sympathies are with the mother and her family. Our concern is also the well-being of our users, including the woman who shared her experience and those who may have viewed the content, and after careful review, have removed the video in question. While it can be difficult for platforms like ours to balance the individual's need for healing expression with the community’s expectation for a safe viewing experience, our own Community Guidelines determined this as the appropriate action to take.”

Lexxxieb continued to post videos of her child, saying, “Y’all pls stop dragging me because I chose to still show her off.” She also urged those who did not like the content that she posted to kindly unfollow her.

“Pls take time to remember I’m still a mother, I’m still someone’s child with feelings. Stop tryna get me banned for something that’s actually give me a ton of peace,” she captioned another video.

After this video, many criticized the social network app, saying videos that violate community standards often get uploaded to the site and cause emotional distress to those who see them.

Criminal Matters Weighs in on the Matter

I tend to agree with the latter. I can name 10 accounts that I follow that post content that is just as disturbing as this. If she felt this was the best way to cope, then who are we to judge her?

I think the greiving mother shocked many people by appearing in clown makeup in the video. Then, some people always complain when they see content that does not halfway suit them. I think we need less of that and more "scroll on by" if the material is not for you.

My condolences to the TikTok user over her loss. I hope she has begun to heal since this tragedy occurred.
