The Perfect Match

And Marshall’s leakage problems

Telephone line’s cut

Marshall does not have it under control, and he’s tired of pretending, he’s not enjoying the solitude. Where’s the love of my life? — he asks himself every other day. A more relatable problem in today’s world could hardly be found. With each unsuccessful romance Marshall’s idealistic concept of love is slipping from his fingertips. Wrinkles are fading in, hope is fading out.

But he’s an optimist by nature. That gives him that emotional boost a couple of days after his depressive episodes. Although the strong belief does also give him the occasional blindness to the reality of things, since he’s gripping onto that fairytale so hard.

Sometimes Marshall develops tunnel vision. Focusing on this idea of the perfect match made him forget that it’s not only about the other person, it’s also about him.

At this point what he desires is a sweetheart next to him that he could talk to and have intimacy with. Someone to go on bohemian ventures together. So what he did was unconsciously circle in the best things about having a relationship and excluded everything else. He forgot that with the coming of a special person, his life would change completely. Even blindly denying it with an ignorant smile on his face.

Despite several long-term relationships, apparently he still doesn’t know how they work. Crying in despair, accusing the Universe of unfairness. Meanwhile, the Universe is doing him a favor, because until he realizes what it actually means to acquire a partner of his desires, he is not going to be given one.

Brain damage

Give away the time alone spent on creative undertakings and exchange it for time spent with a significant other? Marshall would rush on deciding between the two and most likely choose the latter.

Taking care of someone and sharing love might be the best thing in the world, but what would losing that creative outlet mean? What did it mean when it has been lost before? These questions evaded him, or maybe he evaded them.

One of Marshall’s favorite things to do is going to a café.

Alone.

Early morning on a weekend.

Cup of coffee.

Freedom to draw and write.

While on his way to that couple of hours of sacred solitude, thoughts about the perfect girl would intrude his beautiful morning, once again throwing him into the tunnel. Only if he would realize that he was not living this magnificent life of solitude to the fullest because of those thoughts. That he was putting himself into a state of passive suffering. Wanting whatever he did not have, and being blind to the things that he did.

Marshall longed for the perfect match. If she was somewhere out there, in the bar or in the bathroom in the suburbs, what did that perfect match long for? That did not cross Marshall’s mind. He was too focused on himself. And to expect him to change whenever the supposedly perfect person would come along would be rather naïve.

That’s another reason why the Universe would not grant him the synchronicity to meet the girl of his dreams. He is too self-absorbed. And his way of being is not equivalent to the expectations he has for his future partner. And according to the rules of the Universe, that’s why that partner is labeled as future, and not current.

So, Marshall has much to learn. Not to run after the cunning wisp — that should be on his list. He tends to lose himself in the process. And what good is he then? He also has to learn to properly live those moments of solitude, focused and to the fullest. Maybe then he’ll be able show his mademoiselle the beauty of life and what it is all about.

Until then, put the telephone under a pile of pillows, Marshall.
