dating
All about dating. First dates, three years into a relationship, Tinder, and more.
Shades of love
I’m a thirty-five-year-old bartender, yet I never got married because I don’t believe in a lifelong monogamous relationship. It’s not only what the drunk regulars tell me that does not make me trust in sexual honesty for one person but also my first love, which ended in disaster. When I found the girl I trusted in bed with my best friend, I got mad. She tried to convince me that her heart was with me and what she did was not more than a one-night stand – casual sex. I tried to understand her logic and forget her body’s image reacting with my best friend’s body and forgive her, but I couldn’t.

May I Pour You Another?
MAY I POUR YOU ANOTHER? Mornings are the hardest for her, especially Sunday. She wakes crying often, the emptiness and quiet are almost unbearable. She volleys back and forth about staying in bed and binge watching something. She decides to pull herself up all while muttering in her head, “just get thru this day, it will not be like this forever”. It has been 4 years since he left her, left her for another woman, it has been a week since another one told her “we’re done”. Yes, to separate heartbreaking departures by two separate men that she has given a huge portion of her life. How could she be in this place again, “what’s wrong with me” she asks, “why am I not valued by anyone, why doesn’t anyone fight for me, for us”? She considered an online dating site, she was on one before, did not yield much action, just fueled the sadness. Why not try again? It could serve as a much-needed distraction, anything would be better than laying around conjuring up all her insecurities. She decided against the online dating and started focusing more on her body, that is it…every time she felt sad, she would strap on her ankle weights and do an exercise until she no longer thought about how unlovable she felt.

A Night Under A Thousand Stars
You I remember when I was alone and cold. Especially in freshman year of college, you were there across the hall from me, wearing your baggy sweats, with your imperfectly perfect bangs, complimenting your beanie. There you were, listening to that song, KANON. The way the chords complimented each other, how peace transformed into thunderous harmony. Every key turned into you. The look you gave me. The look you saw from me. Was it the same look? I don’t know. I remember how the song complimented your blue eyes, how it rushed and flowed like the ocean, never ending, never standing still. How can one possess the power of the ocean? How can one like this exist? How beautiful, how tranquil, how never ending...

A Taste of Something New
Ari arrived at my door with a backpack full of wine and the jitters. My heart had been broken all but three weeks prior, giving me a devil-may-care attitude that suited my newly dyed hair. It was fuchsia, and I think he liked this wild side of me.

Blind Date
The sun-kissed Daffodils seemed to be nodding their yellow heads directly at me. “Cheers”, I said as I lifted my glass of Merlot to the awakening of Mother Earth. The water of the Chesapeake Bay seemed sun kissed too as it sparkled back at me over the blue forget-me-nots spawning in my yard. “Cheers to you too” I said as I lifted another glass of wine in applause of Spring.

Worth the Wait
It had been a year, an entire year, since a mutual friend had set them up on social media. He laughed as he lit the fire "Caveman Style," as she called it, with flint, steel and tinder. They'd originally set a date for the second week following that first on-line introduction, which had been, as turned out, just a week too late.

Ashton, Kris and Seventeen Years of Wine.
Ashton I should have known this was going to go badly. The signs were neon-green two weeks ago when we started chatting but I was blinded by how hot she looked in pictures. Four days into chatting, I knew I wanted to meet up with her. Coaxing her into having the date in my house proved harder than expected – she thought it was “too fast”. I had my mind on one thing but clearly she wanted more. Easing her mind became my life’s mission over those next few days. We went from chatting on the app to talking on the phone about her dog, her work, her family, her exes. Information wasn’t volunteered unless I asked, questions were never reciprocated. By Monday, she’d finally agreed to meet for dinner in my place come Friday. By day before yesterday, I was out of questions to ask. I needed a way to get conversation started again and my friend Martin suggested a brilliant game idea I could try.

The Edge of Summer
The late spring air held the weight of an oncoming thunderstorm. Summer could feel the building humidity; it stuck to her pores and made even the light coating of foundation on her face feel greasy and unpleasant. Up the street she could hear the high school marching band playing at the start of the last football game of the year.

Unexpected Soulmate
I sit at the too-nice table, inside the too-exquisite restaurant that I would never be caught in ordinarily, tiredly staring at a guy who thinks he is God’s gift to women… and probably God’s gift to the whole world. I have listened to him prattle on and on about stock options, and his freaking red Ferrari, and his daddy the Governor….
