Lupus Awareness Month

May is officially earmarked as the Lupus Awareness Month, a time to increase public knowledge and understanding of lupus. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects millions of people worldwide. Lupus is a disease that can affect people of all ages, races, and ethnicities. The signs and symptoms resemble those of other diseases, hence making it difficult to diagnose. There is currently no known cure for lupus, however there are medicines that can help control symptoms and enhance quality of life for those who have this condition.

What is Lupus?

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), another name for lupus, is an autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly targets healthy tissues. The skin, joints, kidneys, brain, and other important organs are among the tissues and organs that are damaged and inflamed as a result.

Types of Lupus:

The three main types of lupus are:

1. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This is the most common type of Lupus that affects the skin, joints, kidneys and brain among other body organs and tissues.

2. Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE). DLE mostly affects the skin, resultying in a rash that may eventually lead to a scar.

3. Drug-induced lupus erythematosus (DILE). DILE is a form of Lupus that is brought about by specific drugs and usually goes away after the drug use is halted.

Causes and Symptoms

Lupus can cause a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, joint discomfort, skin rashes, fever, and hair loss. Being an autoimmune illness, lupus results in inflammation and tissue damage when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy body tissues. Although the specific cause of lupus is unknown, it is thought to be a result of genetic and environmental factors that includes UV exposure, drugs, and infections.

Diagnosis and Treatment

At present, there is no known medical test to identify lupus, it's diagnosis is therefore challenging in the medical realm. Medical professionals, however, make decisions based on a patient's symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and blood testing. In Certain circumstances, biopsy is required.

There is currently no known cure for lupus, however there are medicines that can help control symptoms and enhance quality of life for those who have the condition. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants as well as as well as lifestyle changes, such as avoiding sun exposure, getting regular exercise, and managing stress can be used to manage lupus.
