Low-level light therapy has increased in popularity among medical professionals in recent years as a means of improving the health and well-being of their patients and clients. Photon light treatment is one type of low-level light therapy.

Photon light treatment has been proven to help skincare practitioners and medical professionals tackle the negative consequences of acne, as well as to have some favorable impacts on skin regeneration. But, before we get into the benefits of photon light therapy, it's important to understand what it is.

What exactly is photon light therapy? This blog post will explain what photon light therapy is, how it works, and what tools you can use to receive it.

What is Photon Light Therapy?

What exactly is photon light therapy? Light treatment (also known as photodynamic therapy) has piqued the interest of scientists for over 40 years. Researchers have been exploring light therapy since the discovery that certain types of light have beneficial effects on the body and at the cellular level. Clinical research conducted by NASA (yes, that NASA), the Mayo Clinic, and Stanford University have shown that photon therapy can help with pain alleviation, inflammation reduction, stress reduction, and much more.

Photon light therapy, in essence, employs visible red light to promote wellbeing by boosting cellular activity. The wavelength of this red light is 660 nanometers. When photon light strikes the skin, it is absorbed as energy by the cells. Nitric oxide is formed when this energy is absorbed by the body. This increases adenosine triphosphate synthesis (or ATP, if you recall your high school science class). ATP is required for cellular activity. It is what provides energy to cells.

Benefits of Photon Light Therapy

Photon light therapy has numerous advantages. These advantages include:

  • May alleviate depression
  • Improve motor function
  • Improve nerve regeneration
  • Assists in wound recovery
  • Improve skin and acne

May Alleviate Depression

Wellness is more than just how one's body feels. It's not only about how physically fit you are or how far you can run. Wellness is more than just your biceps or your weight. Wellness also refers to your mental and spiritual well-being. Unfortunately, many people have mental health issues. Depression is one of the most serious problems that people confront. Depression affects around 264 million people globally.

Photon light treatment may help with depression. This is not a stated truth because study is currently being conducted to verify these assertions, but it is a likely conclusion.

In one trial, roughly 20 patients with seasonal affective disorder were treated with two-hour sessions of light treatment. The usage of green light produced the most positive benefits, reducing the effects of depression in those who got it. The findings of this study point to the possibility of light therapy and photon light in complementing depression treatment regimens.

Improve Motor Function

There has been a lot of research on the effectiveness of photon light therapy (or light therapy, in general) on animals’ motor function. One study tested whether light therapy could improve the motor function of rabbits that had recently suffered a stroke (I know, very sad). The researchers concluded that light therapy administered six hours after a stroke yielded some very promising improvements in motor function.

Improve Nerve Regeneration

Nerves, believe it or not, can renew over time. Photon light therapy can aid in the regeneration of nerve cells, which can aid in the treatment of inflammation and pain.

Assist in Wound Recovery

Photon light treatment can help in wound healing. In fact, it can hasten your recovery! Isn't that fantastic? Many studies have indicated that photon light therapy can help with collagen regeneration, a protein present in the skin and other tissues. This protein aids in skin renewal. As a person ages, they create less collagen, and their skin begins to exhibit signs of aging.

Some research indicate that patients with diabetes have enhanced wound healing; usually, those with diabetes have a prolonged healing period. Though further research is needed to provide a conclusive response about its potential to heal wounds, first findings are encouraging.

Improve Skin and Acne

The skincare sector is one of many exploring the effects of photon light treatment. Because light treatment impacts the skin on a molecular level, it has the ability to improve skin color more than other therapies. In a recent assessment of patients with "acne vulgaris," 85 percent stated that photon light treatment reduced at least half of the blemishes on their skin after around two months. After three months of photon light therapy treatment, almost 20% of those patients noticed a remarkable reduction in their acne by nearly 90%.

Exposure to photon lights with wavelengths ranging from 311 to 313 nanometers causes the body to create vitamin D, which can aid in the growth, repair, and metabolism of skin cells.
