"A Guide to Ocean Survival"

Surviving being stranded on the ocean is possible, according to scientific evidence and the experiences of survival experts and courageous individuals who have lived to share their stories. There have been instances where divers have been left alone in the ocean due to various circumstances such as strong currents, falling overboard, or a shipwreck.

If you find yourself lost in the ocean, far away from civilization and in unpredictable waters, it is important to know what to do in order to survive.

The most important thing to do when finding yourself in this situation is to try and remain calm. Panicking and frantically moving around will only waste energy. It is important to note that panic is the number one enemy in this situation. Additionally, thrashing around may attract sharks, so it is advisable not to do so.

One of the main concerns while drifting on the ocean is ensuring a supply of drinkable fresh water, along with staying afloat, having shelter and food, and potentially having a signaling device. The first priority should be obtaining enough fresh water, with a recommended intake of one-and-a-half to two liters per day to maintain good health, provided one can stay out of the sun.

To collect rainfall, place as many containers as possible. If containers are not available, use clothing to absorb water. However, in the absence of rain, it may be necessary to catch birds and turtles. To attract birds, use fish as bait and catch them with netting or clothing. For turtles, they can be quickly grabbed from the water. It should be noted that bird meat and turtle meat also contain water, so consuming them can provide hydration. It is important to remember that the human body does not process ocean water well due to its high salt content, which can be deadly. Some individuals may consider using urine as a water source, although it may not be the ideal solution.

Drinking urine is not recommended as it contains reabsorbed salt and can lead to dehydration. If you find yourself in water without a boat, hold on to any floating object for stability. If there are no objects available, floating on your back and remaining calm while awaiting rescue is the best course of action.

When faced with the need for shelter in challenging conditions, it is advisable to lie face down and lift your head only to take breaths. Utilize any available resources to create shelter, such as a sail, tarp, or clothing, ensuring to tie or secure the material in at least four corners. In terms of sustenance, consider catching turtles, birds, or going fishing, utilizing any available rope or string, including shoelaces. If possible, it may be helpful to use a knife to fashion a hook by cutting up an aluminum material.

One can pull out a nail and bend it into a hook, as seaweed floats by. Seaweed may contain vitamins and minerals that can be beneficial in times of desperation. Sometimes, seaweed may even have shrimp, fish, or crabs caught on it, which can serve as a tasty meal. Additionally, using flares or a flashlight at night and a hand mirror during the day can be effective signals for help.

If you do not have any way to signal for help, you should look for boats and make a lot of noise to attract attention. Survivors of being stranded in open water are often in poor physical condition when they are rescued. They may have lost a significant amount of weight and may be sunburned or cold.

Some individuals may experience neurological complications from either exposure or inadequate nutrition. Nevertheless, they remain alive and making progress towards recovery. Some individuals have even reported surviving on the water for nearly a year. If you adhere to the guidance provided in this article, there is a high probability of surviving being stranded in the ocean.
