It Was Never About A Label.
It was about an honest foundation.

Somewhere along the line, it no longer became about the label of the relationship but back to the foundation of the relationship.
It was never about a label. It was never about a timeline. It was never about the expectation of needing you to express how you felt perfectly. It was never about you not being allowed to make mistakes or carry shame.
It was never about thinking you ever had ill intent or meant to harm.
You said you wanted to build a connection but then as I laid the bricks, you removed them by doing the very things that a part of you knew there wouldn’t be any coming back from. The very things that actually mattered to me, the things I told you mattered. The integral values. All while I thought we both were laying bricks.
The only expectations I ever held for our connection was for us to both show up with respect and honesty to create trust.
I never wanted you to be smaller. I never wanted you to be less. I wanted you to be real, unfiltered. I wanted you to be able to trust me enough to feel safe to be vulnerable. To know it didn’t have to all be good or pretty. I wanted you to be the full honest truth of what makes you, you.
Not a label. Not a commitment. Not a time frame. Not a specific relationship. Not even a romantic one. Just trust.
I was trying to build a foundation where trust was built through openness while you were managing trust through selective disclosure.
Because to me, honesty is telling me what I reasonably need to know before I have to ask, that is transparency not because you owe it to me to know I deserve to have the full truth.
And it seemed that you operated more from the definition of honesty as answering only what is asked and revealing more if it becomes relevant which while it isn't directly lying, it also isn't building a foundation on transparency or proactive honest communication. It's trying to control the narrative and my perception even if it is occurring subconsciously, it was deception even if not directly.
Maybe that could be argued as differences in how we operate surrounding honesty but as you said from the start you always knew where I stood on my values. I thought we both believed that truth created safety.
Maybe you felt that safety has to exist before truth. Maybe that's the trauma, maybe that's a fundamental difference. But to me, it made me feel like you took away my agency by manipulating my version of what the reality was, what your truth truly is. Even if I can empathize with the place it may have come from and know it wasn't intentional, a spade is still a spade because the impact didn't align with the intention.
A huge part of respecting someone's autonomy is giving them enough reality instead of managing it for them, instead of assuming it for them.
A part of being human and giving ourselves grace means that knowing we will have our triggers, we will inevitably hurt people even when we don't mean to, our intentions will often misalign with our impacts, we may even unintentionally manipulate people, and that we all carry our toxic traits.
It's about being able to live with our trauma and our truth, our light and our dark. It's about being able to live in our truth authentically in transparency with ourselves and others.
To not give just enough truth at times to be able to deflect but to understand that dishonesty wears a lot of different hats. Even with a good heart, the behavior is still the same.
The reality is you shouldn’t ever have to justify if something was truly honest. It shouldn’t be a negation. Transparency shouldn’t ever be about semantics. And that is a hill I will die on.
It's about not prioritizing protecting yourself over being fully accountable for our emotional impacts not because of control but out of respect.
It's about taking emotional responsibility and accountability for how these things impact others. It is not about defining someone as good or bad.
We can be so careful and try our best not to hurt people but the reality is that we still will, it's how we repair from there that matters.
I trusted that you knew you didn't have to have all the answers, you didn't have to be perfect to be genuine.
I trusted that you could not only value but practice honesty under pressure. That your respect to do the right thing would always outweigh what you felt in the moment. That even if you were finding yourself again in this season that the person you portrayed shared integral values with me.
Somehow you were okay with letting me live in ambiguity in the connection, unknowingly making decisions based on incomplete data, incomplete storylines and details. Somehow you felt like that was fair to me. To communicate without cohesion.
To essentially ask me to trust you, to continue to invest into the connection no matter the nature while managing the reality that was necessary for me to decide whether the trust could grow, could still be warranted.
To never be given context but be left to try to find clarity in blurred lines. To provide feelings on internal states without ever translating them into clear relational information. To answer the direct questions I expressed somehow without ever actually usually answering them.
Somewhere along the blurred lines of the confusion that transpired inside of you, you missed the part where at some point it was no longer a question of the category of our relationship if the condition of the foundation was broken. Realizing that once that was gone, the category stopped mattering.
That the "slow burn" of trust and respect had been burned little by little until a bridge was barely left.
From the start, I always just wanted the honest you. Not a filtered version. Not a version that wouldn’t let you be fully seen because you were afraid I wouldn’t accept it.
I never needed you to choose the connection in a commitment. I needed you to choose it in the alignment of your behaviors with the spoken values.
Transparency isn’t about choosing what is relevant and irrelevant for me to know. It is telling me and trusting me to make the right decision for me.
Not a version who felt like the only way to keep the peace was to only give me pieces. Not a version who withheld information in hopes of preserving the connection. I deserved to be informed.
Because confusion doesn't exempt someone from responsibility.
Time and time again I provided and created space for your feelings, for you to not be judged, for you to be honest and you consciously chose not to even when you knew how I felt about things.
One of the most hurtful parts of all of it was that you knew my values from the start, you saw my lived values, you heard stories of when they weren't honored and saw how they impacted me.
Instead of owning it and being honest, you chose to hide when it got hard or uncomfortable.
You chose to do the very things that I had expressed to you tarnished trust and respect in others, to delay information because somehow that seemed better than just telling me in the moment and not expecting shock waves.
I thought you were someone who respected me enough to be responsible with my feelings by not giving me half truths to make decisions about. Someone who healed into a version able to show up as someone who could give and receive trust.
The understanding of knowing that I shouldn’t have to ask the perfect question to get the full story the first time. That the truth shouldn't have to be a battle to find, to uncover.
A version of you that told me how much you respected and cared about me and while I don't doubt you did care to some capacity, I don't think that was ever the problem. The problem was that the actions, the behaviors continuously undermined the very thing that I needed to see, needed to feel to receive the care as genuine.
"Just enough honesty to calm you down, but not enough to free you. Partial truth is still control when it is used to manage your reaction."
The math continuously didn't math and you were okay with me trying to figure out the answers when all along you had them. You wanted me to believe you when there was no congruence, you wanted me to trust you. My body experienced that in real time and still I chose to try to understand you, to be patient, to try to clarify, to stay curious.
You tried so hard in all of our communications and all the carefully edited texts to not ever be misunderstood yet you never actually gave me the tools to be able to understand you. I wanted clarity, you cared about impact. That no matter how much I wanted to see or understand, I was never going to be able to.
That's the thing. You didn't quite seem to know what to do with me.
Maybe you wanted to chase a feeling and I offered safety and stability. You were honest in a way about that but the gap wasn’t in the intention but in not being open about disclosing what all was happening out of fear somehow it would take away your independence or that you would lose me. When it was never going to be the action but the principle that you'd probably lose me on.
You seemed to think I’d still be there no matter what. That you could leave your coffee and it wouldn’t go cold. To not fully consider how things would affect me even if you were trying to “protect” me.
"I'm gonna love you through whatever, but I can't put up with whatever for forever."
You said that you knew I had self worth and respect but then categorized me as a golden retriever which showed me that you thought that I would always be there. That I wouldn't draw a line at some point. That I wouldn't choose me.
That my patience was the absence of standards when it was the presence of grace. But grace has an expiration date when trust is repeatedly broken.
I feel like you mistook my compassion, patience, and willingness to have difficult conversations as you thinking you would always have unlimited access to the version of me that I allowed you to see, allowed you to experience.
I was willing to understand you, not willing to tolerate anything.
The healthy and soft parts of me that I showed up for you were mistaken for an infinite forgiveness loop of being passive or submissive instead of appreciated ultimately taken for granted.
It felt like there was a level of audacity in giving me crumbs and thinking it would be enough to keep me fed. In thinking that I would be always okay keeping the door cracked a little, living in grey. Being the one holding it open.
When you said you saw my value, cared, and respected me. Maybe the conflict all along was that you did see my value but that the version of you that you are currently couldn't act in alignment with all that you acknowledged and that is what drove all the behaviors that you described as contradictory of who you were in your past. Maybe that is what you fought with our whole connection feeling like you were trapped in a toxic pattern spiral of another connection that felt familiar.
The risk that comes in the responsibility of someone else's feelings in any connection.
I think you underestimated my boundaries and the kindness that was extended in me trying to create safety for you that I wouldn't still choose safety for me.
A kind of safety that I maybe thought if I created enough that you would meet me there.
A responsibility that I stopped choosing once I saw it was never something you'd be able to reciprocate back. Not because I stopped caring, not because I blame you, but because I recognized your capacity.
Every time I did something to show you I truly cared, you created distance. Just because you didn't disappear doesn't mean parts of you didn't create emotional distance. When I tried to understand your feelings, you pulled away but yet you always wanted access to mine.
I recognized that a part of you felt like if you kept pushing that I would keep pulling, that I would keep playing and staying in a tug of war that there was a high chance it would never be in my favor even before I knew why. So I chose to let go, for you and for me.
Maybe a part of you felt like if you changed the intention for the direction of the connection, it meant the "pressure" and "expectations" were less but the very things you interpreted as those are still the very same foundation of what is important to me in any sort of meaningful relationship.
Deep integrity in trust. Respect. Honesty. Clarity. Communication.
And that is where I ask myself, "if you ever really truly saw me or understood who I am?"
Because if you did, why would you think I would want or settle for anything built on the kind of ambiguity and withholding that occurred.
When you said " I like who you are." I don't genuinely think you knew who I am, I think you liked your idea of who I was.
That "I was too good to be true" meant to be a compliment but in actuality was you telling me a huge part of you still wasn't ready for someone like me.
That even if there was no intentional harm meant, it doesn’t change the impact of the actions that happened and the hurt that domino-ed because of it, the trust that got eroded.
The version of you that would have been able to understand that me asking for transparency in our connection was never about control and always about respect.
I hope you find your spark again but I also hope that you don’t run from the shadows. That you learn often the people in life you need will challenge you and trigger defense mechanisms and parts you think you healed to see if you’re ready for true safety, if you’re ready to truly be seen and loved. The difference is the way they trigger you isn’t to hurt you but to help you, see that you can be loved fully as you are, without the walls. Not for the highs and lows but to connect deeper.
To not be able to hold space to understand that the problem never was what you wanted or needed to do, it was the fact that you hid or lied about things. It was always about the principle behind it, not because you couldn't be free.
To tell me about unhealthy habits you were picking up and letting me fill in the blanks and think it was about your being triggered somehow by our connection when in reality the truth was it had nothing to do with me.
I felt heard all up until the point that I started to realize I was never heard enough to the point I was taken seriously enough by you to deserve the truth. To outweigh the comforts you prioritized in protecting yourself.
To feel like you always were so concerned about the speed or seriousness that we were moving when it was never about that at all. That for me, it was always about finding safety.
At some point, you switched focus to a friendship in a gray area and the focus for me started evolving into more of a question of if I could even trust you as a person. Not a question of the nature of the relationship but if it could exist or should exist in my life with the way trust had been fractured and continued to be.
To come to the understanding that the current version of who you are could only find peace with your inner confusion by giving me pieces.
That the care that was always verbalized came out as expressed carelessness, emotional recklessness. Consciously or subconsciously, no matter the root of where it stems from I believe that a part of you had to know that it was messy.
I never asked you to be more healed than you were, I just asked for honesty. That’s the difference.
That while it all may have not been a lie by definition. It was dishonest and honestly that felt worse.
Holding space for the understanding in knowing that you probably aren't being fully honest with yourself in some ways and that’s why me asking that of you felt like so much pressure, so many expectations. To be asked to be more vulnerable with me than you are with yourself.
What hurts the most isn’t that we didn’t ever become anything, it’s that I thought that I could trust you. I did fully at one point.
It hurts that all the time while I was building, it feels like now you were breaking it at the same time.
The irony in the end is that you wanted the same certainty and clarity from me after having spent much of the connection creating ambiguity for me.
That once you realized your access had changed, once you didn't know I was available. Once I started reciprocating the energy I had been given you didn't like that feeling.
Our whole connection it seemed like I was trying to build trust while you were managing uncertainty.
It was never about me trying to force anything to be romantic or long term. It was just about trying to build a connection that we would both be able to trust and where mutual respect could live, where we could exist and thrive in stability and safety regardless of the nature.
This isn't about being fixated on honesty. It's about what honesty would have created fundamentally in a foundation through mutual respect, informed choice, emotional safety, and trust.
Honesty was the structure that started the collapse of the connection.
I tried to connect from a place of full vulnerability and you from a place of trying to figure out how to not lose yourself again, a place of being terrified to lose yourself again.
I don't think that it was ever a question of compatibility but more of the reality of capacity.
That isn't something I blame you for nor do I think you ever had any malicious intentions or were intentionally trying to hurt me with the way things were handled.
A place of not being able to fully show up in a new connection because half your effort felt like it went toward protecting yourself.
In all of this, I've learned how much I equate honesty with care and I believe that what hurts the most is that I feel like with all the trickle truthing and withheld information it feels like you never trusted me enough to tell me.
And I know in actuality that it has nothing to do with me but that is how it impacted me, that is why it hit home. All the little moments that I found out little by little that poked holes in everything I believed to be truth and reality at the time. All the things that eventually validated the things I was feeling all along that I was never given reassurance or direct answers for finally made sense.
You shattered my perception of what I thought to be real and true. And that is what I've had to make peace with. To leave the pieces where you put them.
To remember that just because I can understand and empathize with where you're coming from that it doesn't mean that it is okay. It doesn't erase the damage that it did. It doesn't mean I have to continue to tolerate. That I deserve to feel safe too. That understanding doesn't equate to tolerance of disrespect. To not excuse with empathy.
Holding space for two truths to exist equally.
Empathy doesn't invalidate impact. Intentions don't invalidate consequences. Understanding does't invalidate boundaries. Care doesn't invalidate disrespectful patterns. Compassion doesn't invalidate accountability.
To make peace with my inner conflict of trying to reconcile someone whose stated values looked incredibly similar to mine but in actuality whose lived behavior felt increasingly different from mine.
I don't question what you said you felt for me. I question how they were shown and that is very different. I can value your intentions while still holding space to honor my feelings.
For you, respect is intentions. For me, it means aligning behavior in transparency, accountability, and consistency. For me, it is impact.
It means congruence. It means trusting me to manage my own reactions instead of trying to protect my feelings for me.
I answered the question you weren't asking because it wasn't actually the real question on the table. You wanted to know about friendship. The temperature check has always been about integrity.
I don’t blame you for your confusion or your conflict or even your mixed signals and indecisiveness. You were always allowed to have that. It was the lack of letting me in to fully understand the cohesive picture instead of keeping me in the box you wanted me to stay in.
The truth is that I could have worked through almost any owned truth but not through patterns of dishonesty.
I chose to leave the connection not because of your imperfections, literal decisions, or your trauma but because the pattern of behavior that surrounding those things, handling those things no longer could support the kind of trust that I need for any connection that is going to be meaningfully safe for me.
Honesty for me is more than a moral principle because it equates to trust.
To not ignore the betrayal I feel in you essentially asking me to trust you while you withheld pieces of the reality surrounding our connection that played a part in that trust. The internal questioning I feel of the process I experienced learning to trust you.
I no longer saw any value in trying to connect with someone who seems like they are deeply disconnected from their own clarity, to release the confusion that our connection once contained.
To not fault you for your journey or your process but to give you the full freedom of being as untethered as you always wanted.
It was never about a label. It was always just about clarity in authenticity. Leading with honesty. Connecting with openness. Respect through consistency. Co-creating a safe space to be the most real versions of ourselves.
I once thought we aligned on words aligning consistently with actions.
I never wanted clarity for certainty of what we were but more to understand the reality.
I wasn't ever asking for you to choose me, I was asking for enough trust to let me choose with the truth.
A connection where we were building trust not managing information, managing uncertainty.
A meaningful connection can't be rooted in uncertainty. It has to be built on the reality of shared honesty, respect, and trust.
Because a foundation for any relationship without trust will always crack.
All I ever wanted was a connection where I was trusted enough to choose my own truth.
That was always the whole point.
