As someone in my early 20s, I am often faced with bouts of existential crisis. I often wonder if luck is real and why some seem to have more of it. Over the years I have come to the realization that luck is halfway a mystical force and halfway a methodical approach to life.

There are certain serendipitous events in our life we can’t control. Such as being at the right place at the right time. Meeting the right person at the right time. Getting an opportunity that completely transforms our life.

However, we can position ourselves in a way that would increase our chances of encountering such luck. This is the methodical and strategic element to luck. This is the part we can control and leverage. I’ll give you some tips and ideas on how you can increase your chances of shaking hands with this mystical force.

Start off with small wins. If you ever face a slump in your life, let’s say a career slump, give yourself small wins. Go out and do things you know you have a high chance of succeeding at. Take on small projects and ventures you know you can best. Giving yourself a streak of wins places you into a more positive mindset and makes you open to receiving more wins. You are essentially your training your subconscious to view you as a winner. Hence, attracting more winning opportunities in your life.

Put yourself out in the world. This is a tough one for many. Networking and building quality connections is a daunting task that can span years. For the introverts, the internet and social media is a great option. Building up engagement and a targeted audience can help you get your foot through the door. This can be done through active social media accounts, running a blog, making videos, trying out a small business, posting your art, and above all, prioritizing SEO for optimal outreach.

You can build connections anywhere. Usually schools and places of work are the most obvious options. You can strike up conversation with a stranger at a cafe, at an airport, at a library, wherever. In today’s world, everyone is socially anxious to some degree. Just say “hi” and jump into it. Treat life like a blank canvas. If you have a bad interaction. Shake it off. Try it again some other time. You never know who you will meet and what that person will become in your life, a friend, a mentor, a lover.

Branch out and assume place for yourself in this world. You’re already here. Might as well take up some space.

Say yes more often. When opportunities arise in life or when life changes course, say yes more often. You never know where a yes might lead to. Sometimes, a random opportunity is simply luck knocking at your door. Obviously, take your intuition and judgement into account and do not accept harmful offers. But, try to let go and say yes more often.

Pay attention when there is sudden change in your life. You got laid off, you got kicked out of school, your relationship severed, you moved to a new place, you started a new venture. Whatever that sudden change might be, reflect on it. Be present in the moment and notice the patterns of life. Sudden changes only happen when a new timeline is waiting for you. Sometimes, your grandest wishes require you to accept change, no matter how ugly, to achieve them. There is always a master plan and the most minute of our actions can alter several chains of events.

Stop trying to control life. You should have some structure to your daily routine and a set of goals to achieve each year. But stop trying to control every facet of your life. Leave room for luck to manipulate the cards in your favor. Go with the flow more often. This helps decrease chances of attachments and regrets. Life is a steady ebb and flow. Learn to float along with it, not against it. Pick up new experiences, learn constantly, and keep trying new things. Something will come your way. It is inevitable.

Try these 5 strategies. Keep in mind that life is a blank slate. You can start over whenever. There are no boundaries other than the ones you have created in your mind. View life as an experiment and make room to try new things. Try these 5 strategies for only a month and see how far it takes you in that month alone. It takes just one profound moment to alter one’s life.
