How Social Media Affects our Identity
Getting Through the Digital Maze
In this new era, it goes without saying that the impact of social media cannot be overlooked. This digital era, once a simple way to interact and stay in touch with people and families, has now developed into a powerful force molding how we see ourselves as well as other people. It has changed the manner in which we share, connect, and interact. From the plain, ordinary to the unprecedented, each post, comment, and like plays a massive and deeper role regarding our digital personas. But is it only fun and games? Let's not forget the pros that came along
A wild Jungle
Going from the omnipresent YouTube to the dazzling Instagram and the concise TikTok, those platforms just keep increasing and have become a wild jungle where our identities and personalities run rampant, attracting overwhelming attention and sometimes unsolicited ones. A jealous ex or a fan turned stalker.
I wish i were you...
One of the most dangerous aspects of social media is the cultural difference. You scroll from post to post, watching others enjoying life to the fullest, indulging themselves in food you have never tasted, driving cars you don't possess, taking trips to countries you never knew existed. Some people are narrow-minded and lack emotional intelligence, and can't help getting jealous and cursing others, wishing they had that life. This resentment and hatred building up can dissolve confidence and encourage an insecurity, pushing us to form our personality to fit cultural assumptions. Wishing we were someone else.
Be true to oneself
Even though you are expected to play a role to get to the top in this sphere, there's a rising demand for being real and true. The display of genuine emotions and imperfections is expected. It's like a rebellion against the idea of projecting a flawless image online. The audience depends on authenticity. It's a reminder that there is actually a human being behind the screen, with the same red blood in their veins, going through the same life challenges. Credibility turns into a reference point, directing us back to our actual selves amidst the computerized storm.
The Power of Connection
On the other side, social media has the ability to cultivate genuine and worldly connection. It permits us to share encounters, support each other, and create professional networks around shared interests all around the world. From simple gaming groups to worldwide developments, social media gave voice to those who didn't think they had one or couldn't express themselves before, and also a sense of belonging, especially during troubled times (COVID, etc.).
Double-Edge Sword
However, being famous comes at a price. Your life is no longer yours alone. Yes, you are a public figure now, and you need to play the part. What you do, eat in your favorite restaurant, what car you drive, what you wear outside, who you hang out with, your life partner, your friends, and family; everything is under the microscope now. Whether you do or don't do anything, you will be judged and criticized. You can no longer be filmed half-drunk in a club when perhaps you advocate hating alcohol. You cannot be seen kissing a blonde when you are supposed to be in a relationship with a brunette named Jane... It sends the wrong message. Your privacy is exposed to the world to see. What you say and do are subject to public scrutiny !
As you can see, social media plays a very complex role in shaping our identity. It shapes how we see ourselves as well as other people, encouraging both association and separation. We have to be extra careful moving toward virtual entertainment with mindfulness and authenticity. Those platforms are just tools for self-expression and ways to connect and grow. Not to self-destruct and lose sight of reality. Having millions of followers at your beck and call can make one go crazy and feel powerful. You have to be self-aware of this power you wield and harness it to better yourself and for positive changes. One wrong turn can prove fatal. We know of influencers and celebrities that are seeking professional help because they couldn't handle the pressure or became addicted and lost themselves in this digital era.
