There are a million and one reasons why lovers turn to exes. It’s either someone cheated, the relationship turned toxic, or one of you fell out of love. Whatever reason there is, one truth still stands: getting over them is not easy.

They may have done you wrong, but there's no denying the love you had for each other. You’ve gone through so much together - you can’t throw away your good memories so easily.

Deep down inside you know you still have feelings for them, despite the hurt they caused you. They’ve been a huge part of your life — losing them is much like losing a limb. You know it's gone, but you still feel some sort of phantom pain.

Eventually, you’ll have to accept the fact and face the bitter truth that they’re moving to greener pastures — and you’re not a part of it. So chin up. You have a brighter path ahead of you.

Here are a few things you can do to finally move on for good:

1. Read a Book

You can never go wrong with reading a good book to help distract yourself from heartache. But you know what’s a good book to read when you’re feeling blue? A self help book.

Self help books aren’t the cash grab you think they are. Although there are some who do it for the ego boost and money, you can still find some really good authors whose genuine intention is to give advice.

Besides, self help books give you a fresh new perspective that can help pull you out from your break-up blues. If you want to feel whole again, a good book will never let you down.

2. Touch Some Grass

In internet speak, this means going outside because you’ve had too much social media. You already have so much on your plate, you don’t need harmful and toxic content to make your day even worse.

You might also be tempted to stalk your ex on social media to see how they are doing. You may be curious to see if they’ve moved on already or if they are doing any better than you. But no matter how hard you try to convince yourself you are doing it for a good reason, there’s no denying that it is indeed pathetic. You’re only making yourself more miserable.

Leave social media for a bit. You can go back to it when you are feeling better.

3. Love Yourself

Breakups often leave us feeling worse for wear. We tend to neglect ourselves and drown ourselves in alcohol or whatever fixation we have to distract ourselves.

It’s understandable — you’ve lost your source of love in your life. But your ex isn’t the only person in this world who can love you. You also have yourself.

Treat yourself. Do the things you’ve always wanted to do and what you still love to do.

You can even make a bucket list and make it a goal to complete it. By the time you’re done, you have probably healed a huge part of yourself already.

Starting a New Life

We all have our ways to cope with a break up. You just have to find healthy ways that work for you.

When you feel like you're stuck, be reminded that what you're going through is a phase, and there's no need to rush things. Keep your mind open to new beginnings and self-improvement.

One day, you'll be able to look back with gratitude for the hurtful experiences that helped shape you. In due time you will heal. And when you do, you'll be able to open new doors to better, healthier relationships.
