British Olympian Katie Archibald sustained serious injuries, including a dislocated ankle, fractured lower leg, and two torn ligaments, after an accident at home.

Katie Archibald, a two-time British Olympic champion cyclist, announced her withdrawal from the Paris 2024 Olympics following a mishap in her backyard. On June 20, the 30-year-old shared on Instagram that she had tripped over a step, leading to a dislocated ankle, broken tibia and fibula, and two ligaments being torn from the bone.

In her Instagram post, Archibald described the incident: “I tripped over a step in the garden and managed to, somehow, dislocate my ankle; break my tibia and fibula; and rip two ligaments off the bone. What the heck,” alongside two hospital photos. The first image showed her smiling slightly while sitting in bed, and the second displayed her left leg in a cast with an arrow drawn on her thigh and knee.

The accident occurred on a Tuesday, and by Wednesday, she had undergone surgery to realign the bones and reattach the ligaments. Archibald mentioned that she was expected to be discharged that afternoon and expressed gratitude to the staff at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

Archibald apologized for the impact on the Olympic team, acknowledging that she would not be participating in the upcoming games. She decided to publicly confirm her withdrawal to avoid rumors and concluded her post with, “Might be back with more updates, might be gone from the socials for a bit - TBC. Ciao for now. Katie x.”

Support flooded in, with Team GB commenting, “Wishing you a speedy recovery, Katie ❤️," and six-time Olympic gold medalist Chris Hoy adding, "Oh Katie… I’m so sorry. What an absolute kick in the teeth. Get well soon and rest up. ❤️."

British Cycling also addressed the situation on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Earlier this week, Katie Archibald had an accident at home which has resulted in a broken ankle which she has since had surgery on. Following medical advice, this unfortunately means that Katie will be unable to compete at the upcoming Olympic Games.” The organization expressed their sorrow over her injury and committed to providing her with the best possible support during her recovery.

Archibald's Olympic achievements include a gold medal in the team pursuit at Rio 2016 and another gold in the women’s madison, along with a silver in the women’s team pursuit at Tokyo 2020. However, her career has been marred by injuries; in 2022, she missed the Commonwealth Games after colliding with a vehicle and suffered a broken collarbone and fractured spine in a crash at the UCI Track Nations Cup the same year as per the Guardian.
