A Woman’s Worth
Too real to be just stories - and this ending isn't really the end

The March sun kissed the wide windows of Sunrise Tower, scattering golden light through the branches stirred by a gentle breeze. On the top floor of the building, seated at her desk, was Selmah, a young woman. Her wavy blonde hair framed a face of soft features, while her fingers moved quickly across the keyboard. She wore a dark tailleur, elegant and formal — the perfect armor for her professional life. On the edge of the desk sat a small tabletop calendar. With a smile full of sweet, trembling emotion, she reached out to turn the page.
March 18th — Wedding Anniversary.
Her heart leapt in her chest. A wedding anniversary. Eyes bright with happiness, she opened a desk drawer and pulled out a small red gift package, tied with a white ribbon. From inside the bag she drew a heart-shaped card, on which a simple but profound message was written: “I love you, my dear!”. She held it close, feeling a sudden warmth spread beneath her skin. She decided that, for that day, duty could wait. She grabbed her bag, the gift, and left the office, walking lightly toward home, guided by the promise of that bond.
As she walked down the quiet hallway leading to her apartment, the emotion kept building. She held the gift to her chest as of it were the most precious treasure in the world. Standing before her front door, she slipped the key into the lock. She expected darkness, ssilence, or perhaps a romantic surprise. She smiled as she opened the door, her heart full of anticipation.
But the moment she stepped inside, her smile froze.
On the living room floor, scattered in eloquent, chaotic desorder, were clothes. A man’s suit, pieces of underwear strewn here and there, a red evening dress, and a pair of red high heels. The air in the apartment turned suddently cold, unbreathable. The bag slipped from her fingers, and the gift fell to the floor with a dull thud. The little cardboard heart split in two — a perfect mirror of what was happening inside her.
Tears began to streak her face, hot and unstoppable, ruining her carefully applied makeup. In that moment, the pain transformed into something different. Something strong, powerful, and primal began to awaken from the depths of her soul. Rage. There was no room for pleading or weakness. Even she hadn’t expected such fury from herself.
A man and a woman emerged from the bedroom, visibly caught off guard. They began hurriedly dressing. Selmah’s reaction was immediate, driven by a fierce anger: she raised her arm, pointing at the door with a trembling but resolute finger, ordering them to leave at once. The man turned for just a moment, guilt in his eyes, before the door closed behind them for good.
The sound of the door closing behind the two lovers left the apartment in an unnatural silence, dense and heavy as lead. Selmah slid down against the back of the couch, curling into herself, while the walls of the home — the home she had furnished with such care, brick by brick, promise by promise — seemed to close in around her, suffocating her.
Darkness fell — the darkness of a world shattered, collapsed silently, yet devastatingly.
The firts minutes were a violent assault of questions, those toxic, inevitable questions that crowd the mind of someone betrayed. She stared at the floor, her gaze lost in emptiness.
Why did he do it? What’s wrong with me?
Her mind began chasing the details of that woman in the red dress. She tried to reconstruct her face, her hair, the blurred silhouette glimpsed in the hallway through tear-filled eyes. What does she have that I don’t? Is she prettier? Lighter? More interesting? She looked at her own hands, then at her work tailleur. She suddently felt inadequate, dull, gray. A twisted sense of guilt crept in: Maybe I worked too much. Maybe I was too distracted. Maybe I became boring.
Then her inner thoughts changed direction, digging into the past, infecting every happy memory. How long has this been going on? How many times did this happen in our bed? How many times did he look into my eyes and lie, saying “I love you”? Every past anniversary, every smile, every kiss received over the last months was suddently redrawn by the shadow of doubt. Was it all a lie?
The Turning Point in the Dark
She stayed there, motionless in the dark, crying every tear she had left in her body. Sobs shook her chest, but little by little, as the storm of tears began to subside, a clear emptiness took its place. A reflective silence.
She started into the void and, for the rirst time since that nightmare began, stopped seeing herself through his eyes.
She stopped searching for blame in her own flaws. She remembered the devotion, the loyalty, the care and sincere love she had poured into that marriage. She had been faithful, present, authentic. And suddently, like a bolt from the bluesm she understood.
There is nothing wrong with me.
The truth stood before her thoughts with crystal clarity: her husband’s betrayal did not define her worth — it defined his lack of it. It wasn’t her failing: it was he who lacked the capacity, the maturity, or the depth needed to appreciate, cherish, and protect a rare, faithful person. His behavoir said nothing about what she lacked — it spoke of the emptiness that selfishly lived inside him.
The Transformation
With this awareness, the air in the room changed. The cold of abandonment gave way to a deep warmth, a primal force pushing to break free.
A circle of golden fire lit up the darkness of the apartment. When she opened her eyes, the rears were gone, dried by an inner fire. Her irises no longer reflected pain, but shone with pure, living gold.
The outer transformation became the manifesto of her inner rebirth. The dark tailleur — symbol of a life trying to fit into schemes too tight, too formal — dissolved. In its place, shining golden armor wrapped around her body, while a cloak of liquid light began to float in the air, warming the space around her. Her blonde hair was no longer disheveled from crying, but rose into a crown of luminous rays.
Suspenden in midair, she looked down at the room from above. On her face bloomed a proud, regal, immense smile.
She understood. She was like the Sun.
The Sun does not concern itself with those who cannot bear to look at it. From that day frward, her life would be guided by this certainty. There would be those who would love her intensity. There would be those who would pray and reach out their hands just to catch a fragment of her light, and those who would run far away, frightened and blinded by a warmth too strong for their own mediocrity.
But none of that was her problem anymore. The Sun does not dim its light so as not to bother those who prefer the shadows.
She would remain exactly what she was: immutable, proud, immense. She would keep living her life, walking with her head held high, shining purely with her own light.
In the end, the lesson was contained in that one ternal truth:
“I am the Sun, and my rays are not wor everyone.”
