Cooties
Cooties, I nominate you for Underrated Gem. Seeing a few promos for this film over five years ago, I was intrigued. I didn't exactly keep up with the release of this little picture that could. This film completely slipped under the radar in 20015, except for Sundance and video on demand, to which it had minimal success. My need to watch this film came stumbling back to me as I found it on Peacock Streaming of all places. Finding this horror comedy at the right moment in time, movie day was set in my house. Completely forgetting this film, after its release. Happy to say this little flick packs a wallop of horror comedy and forever adds to the genre of killer kids films. Part zombie bottle movie. Part satirical improvisation sessions. For a movie from the Co-Creator of Glee and the writer/actor from Saw, this film is mostly unseen. The pairing of these two really shines as modern Leave It to Beaver style meets the characters of Glee, by way of zombie apocalypse.

‘Run’ Review—A Nail-Biting Thriller
Of all the films to skip movie theaters and go straight to a streaming service, this may be the one that hurts the most. From director Aneesh Chaganty comes Run, a mystery horror-thriller about a teenage girl named Chloe Sherman (Kiera Allen) who suffers from many illnesses and gets around in a wheelchair. She soon suspects that her mother, Diane (Sarah Paulson), has been keeping a secret from her and her investigation leads her down an incredibly disturbing rabbit hole.

Chopping Mall
I nominate the Underrated Gem, "Chopping Mall", from 1986 to be seen as an oft remembered VHS video store closing pick. As a young child I would always pass this VHS and it always caught my eye. At the time, all I had to go on was packaging art, sometimes a picture or qoute about the film. This film ran on pure imagination and speculation. I fought for a long time to rent this time capsule bathed in the mid 80's of a motion picture. I yearned to have this film bathe it's vision over me. I always had a thing for weird, out there films and art work. It has always captured the imagination. I found hope in the odd.

Freddy Krueger is the scariest yet best horror villains of all time. The first movie was made in 1984, which happens to be the same year was born. I saw the movie in 1992. I was 9 years old. I was scared to go to sleep, even scared to go to the bathroom. I think I used the bathroom on myself that night. I have the first Nightmare On Elm Street movie on DVD in my house. I was completely terrified of a man with claws that kills people in their sleep. For some strange reason, at a flea market once, I bought a poster of him. What in the world did I do that for? Every night, I was convinced that he was going to jump out of that poster at any minute.

Review of “Straight Edge Kegger”, Coming Soon to Shudder
The punk rock indie film titled “Straight Edge Kegger”, written and directed by Jason Zink (“Night Terrors” 2014), is slated to drop on Shudder at an unreleased date in 2021, and watchers are in for what other critics are calling “a wild ride”. Rightfully so, the film digs its claws into the straight edge subculture for a raw look at the interpersonal strains of Brad, portrayed by Cory Kays, and the deadly outcome of his choice to leave his militant gang of straight edgers. The 2019 completed thriller film yields comedy and as much heart and grit as it does gut-spilling gore. It’s the film for both dedicated horror audiences, thrill seekers, comedy buffs, and straight edge punks alike. While there’s times that stall, the film has a way of keeping you interested, with some corny humor you’ll laugh at more than you’ll have anticipated. It’s a product of indie filmmaking done right: a structured and believable plot that allows the watcher to watch and enjoy the movie, not notice every time the cinematographer forgot to come to work that day.

Freaky: The Gen Z version of Scream
When Wes Craven released Scream back in 1996, he truly changed the horror genre. After over a decade of slasher movies being overdone and beaten like a dead horse (pun intended), this classic provided a fresh take by providing humor, wit, and self-awareness. While it certainly wasn't the first horror comedy to break the fourth wall, it was effective enough to create a slasher renaissance. The next five years saw a whole slew of Scream copycats that included I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legends, and Valentine. Even though that hype train has since left the station, Craven's beloved love letter to the horror genre continues to influence some of today's horror movies. Last night, I saw what could possibly be Generation Z's version of Scream. I am, of course, talking about Freaky.
