Practice Makes Perfect
One of my earliest and fondest memories of my Grandmother is playing Slumbering Child. The rules were simple: my sister and I would lie in our beds and pretend to sleep while Grandma tried everything from tickling to bribery to trick us into revealing we were awake. When we got older, Grandma told us stories of creatures that would come in the night and devour us if they knew we were awake.

Regret
There was a little boy who had to live with her grandmother. Since he was born, he did not know her parent only her grandmother. Her life was not easy. They do not have a lot to survive. Her poor grandmother had to sell food across the street. The boy was very brilliant. He kept motivating himself by going to school and helping her grandmother after school. He was smart, quiet, and respectful.

The Darkness
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. Until tonight when the veil appeared thinnest, barely a fine mist hanging in the air. Through it Mina could see the Otherside. The darkness here contained all the relics of the past. As the clouds parted across an empty sky behind her in Hatherden she could see orange fire streaks billow and disappear in all directions beyond the soft brume. She squinted at the mirage, questioning for a moment the truth of a place she knew existed but had never seen. The place where darkness was alive and watching her every move now. Her word was her bond and even in death, Vaggar had said, the darkness would still see her. Even in death her debt would not have been paid and so darkness, laying its claim, would follow her wherever her soul wended.

jewel-like eyes
I crept down the dimly lit hallway, my partner following quietly behind me. As we approached the small wooden door, I pressed my back to the wall nodding to my partner. He maneuvered into the center of the hallway drawing his firearm and aimed for the door.

Le Démon et L'Hypnotiseur
Cina somberly tidied up her empty shop on that peculiar windswept day. A hypnotist with an attached apothecary wasn’t exactly in demand in the year 2009. People just weren’t interested in the mystical arts anymore; technology and science had become their new forte. No longer being a spring chicken, she was dismayed at the thought of turning fifty the subsequent week. Vitality and a youthful appearance never hurt in gaining customers. She sighed as she disposed of a jar of herbs that had been sitting on the shelf so long that they no longer emitted any scent, and were certain to no longer contain any beneficial properties. If business kept going like this, she would be forced to close her doors before long.

A Most Glorious Friday the 13th
Rain came down in silver sheets, slicing the morning like razors as Gloria pounded the pavement, her backpack thudding against her back with each desperate stride. The sky above boiled in grays, a yawning beast of thunder and menace, and the wind rose as if stirred by ancient breath. Her limbs ached, lungs flamed, but she could not be late. Not her first week back. Not now.
